DMG for seizures, fatty liver disease?

Sponsored Links
I won some back issues of Bird Talk in a parrot charity auction ... found an article about uropygial glands that said DMG helped prevent or reduce seizure incidents, plus a host of other benefits. I found an article from an Australian vet who puts all his avian liver patients on it ... does anyone use this, or know more? (DMG stands for dimethylglycine)

I have never used it. It makes sense, but defining dosage would seem to be where the magic is as whether it will work or not.

Re: DMG for seizures, fatty liver disease?

That's really very interesting, and if I go back to Organic Chemistry (yuck) as I recall glycine adds a methyl group to all of the major metabolic processes that take place in the body of both humans/mammals and birds. So it makes sense that it would help in the treatment of liver ailments, well, not only because it assists the liver in all of the metabolic processes that take place in the liver, but also simply because glycine itself is manufactured/stored in the liver as well. This is also the main reason that DMG is used by bodybuilders/athletes as a performance-enhancing drug, as it assists in every single metabolic process that takes place in the body by adding more methyl groups, thus supposedly speeding-up your "metabolism"...I've also heard that people are now using it as a supplement to treat Autism. I don't know how effective DMG is for Autism or what the logic is behind it, but it's beginning to be mentioned more and more in medical journals regarding Autism treatments.

I can also see DMG assisting in the treatment of seizures, depending on what the cause of a specific person's or bird's seizures is suspected to be...The main reason that comes to my mind would be that DMG (glycine) aides in oxygen utilization by cells, thus reducing hypoxia. So if the seizures are thought to be due to a hypoxic state in the body, then giving DMG makes a lot of sense.

Re: DMG for seizures, fatty liver disease?

I heard about this when researching for Plum but didn't use it. Have you got the article from the Aussie Vet as would be really interesting to read please?

My vet swears by the stuff. I have and use it, although not on a regular basis... usually only when I have a sick animal.

My vet has said that you can't overdose on it. It can be given daily, though.

DMG: A Nutrient for the New Millennium

An article describing DMG supplements in poultry feed. But these birds, sadly, have very short lives. Still looking for long term effects in parrots. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journ...D8/core-reader
