White Bread Obsession

Sponsored Links
Alright just something I found funny so decided to post. I was craving some white bread and decided to eat some while my bird was out (1 year and 9 months old male yellow sided ggc) and he nibbled on a bit of it. I didn't think much of it (and I am aware that large amounts of white bread are bad for birds, he only hate 4-5 bites so he'll be ok) and he really liked it. So he was just sitting there chasing this loaf of bread around. I know this post doesn't contribute to anything but I just felt like sharing it because I thought it was funny. If you read it thx I appreciate.

Re: White Bread Obsession

Hold on just realized he ate from one part where i took a bite, which did have some saliva on it, and I just figured out saliva can be toxic to birds, I know this is a panic post but will he be ok? It wasn't a lot... ;-;

Re: White Bread Obsession

Skittles LOVES white bread and pizza crusts. Its okay as a 'rare' treat, but its important to also limit the treat. One or two small pieces (like broken off) is all I give him on those rare occasions. He often wants more, but he's good at 'moving on' to 'birdmade treats' shortly after.

Re: White Bread Obsession

My cockatiel Fang looooooves toast. When he was ill recently and off his feed it was the perfect bribe to get him eating - at that point I didn’t mind what he ate as long as he ate something. He had his own slice of wholegrain toast with nothing on it but just sharing it with his dad got him through a bit of a rough patch healthwise and he’s doing much better now

Re: White Bread Obsession

Appie has no manners whatsoever and will chase the food down my throat if she gets a chance...
so she gets some saliva once in a while ( I really cannot be vigilant 24/7, esp with 3 hooligand running around).

Human saliva is not recommended (bacterial load etc.) but it hasn't harmed her yet.

Lots of people have the rather unsaviory habbit of feeding the bird from their mouths ( probably where she learned it as wel- I am her 7th? - 17 th? owner) and most birds survive afaik.

Here on the forum is the first place I heard NOT to do that, most people do not care/ have not heard of it.
( afaik It is more likely people will get sick when the bird carries psittacosis/ aka *that* clamydiabacteria than vice versa)

Remi loves carbs. Loves bread, anything crunchy like crackers etc. I just offer whole grain if possible, and as an occasional treat.

Re: White Bread Obsession

Bowie also would be willing to jump down my throat to get something out of my mouth, pretty much anything and everything I'm eating..He isn't allowed to sit on my shoulder when I'm eating OR drinking because he wil sit there and hit me in the face with his foot and scrape his beak down my cheek trying to get whatever it is...

He'll most-likely be fine if he only ate a few bites out of your mouth, just don't make a habit of feeding him from your mouth or from things you've eaten off of due to the bacteria in our mouths. They can get infections that way...

Re: White Bread Obsession

Salty now recognizes he is about to get one of his favorite dinner treats by the shape of the boxes. Yes, PIZZA. He only gets a bit of crust broken off, but he starts going nuts when the pizza guy hands the box over to me.
