American Bulldog Mix,
Just read a forum topic about some one not getting adequate advice form here. Gave me an idea. I know we are labeled junior or senior members, etc, but can there be an extra label placed on people who are avian certified vets, or registered breeders, etc?

This way we can see who actually has a certificate of knowledge in birds? It may help weed out innacurate advice.

I think that's a great idea mara at least then we will be able to tell what members are avian certified and will be able to help us out more than the normal users good thinking on this one :worship2:

I take all the advice on here as good common sense from people who have experience with birds I do not expect a certified advice (that I pay for) And almost every time I've read a post on a really serious problem the answers start off with (See an avian vet) so anyone with problems with the advice they get on here are the same ones that complain about free ice cream in only one flavor.

I completely agree friedsoup, but we had a member who complained yesterday about bad advice. I just wish there was some way to make that happen less

Well if they are complaining that we give bad advice I surgest they go else where to find the help they need we are only limited to the advice we can give some one due to our experiance I think people should take into consideration that we are giving them the advice they need at all some people are so ungreatful it really annoys me sometimes

I read that post as well and I'm thinking (as in MY opinion) that if a Avian Vet were to read "snippets" from ANY bird forum they would probably say close to the same thing. However, I also feel they are going to read everything with a VERY one sided outlook as that one did. I think we as "non-professionals" just try to learn as much as we can where ever we can. We're not all perfect (but then again neither are MD's or DVM's). If she cared so much, perhaps she should have corrected where someone erred in their comments? (Yes, I know, that would be considered "free" advice). I trust my breeder implicitly as she hold MANY avian Certs, so I always follow her lead & have yet to seek advice other than hers. Yes, I'm very lucky in this aspect, but I'll say this, when I comment on a thread here & it's from something she taught me, I'll stand behind it 200%.
Lastly, it would be pretty hard to "validate" someone saying they had the proper credentials online so you'd still be taking a risk anyway.

Besides, I'll tell ya iffin I'm yanking yer chain :D

I understand exactly, but we cant be rude and attacklthis person (as I've been to another forum and seen) that's why I'm trying to think of a way to make it better. But in reality we cannot verify certifications and MDs and DVMs don't have all the info they would need to help with certain issues so its just as good as a guess. Some people take the advice given to the grave, and instead it should be taken with a grain salt. Every bird is different anyway. I guess there is no real way to improve the advice we give :(

In my eyes the advice we give is only as good as our knowledge we only know what we learned if people can't take the advice we give then don't but I say all the advice I have being giving on here has being great and I have met some really nice people one being you mara and wharfrat wenz henpecked and a few others.

I think the problem is is that one person gives one view on something and another person views it differently, which creates a confusion on what advice to listen too, but that's when they should weight the differences and do thier own research.

We all have differant views and experiances with our fids if we all had the same experiences we wouldn't be able to help or advise any new or current bird owners but I guess some people will never be greatfull but that's just IMO

It's really quite simple, what works for one won't always work for the other :)

If a person joins any bird forum for medical advice that is a poor decision and risky for that person's bird. Sure we can all give suggestions based on our own experience. Many times people do say contact an avian vet and that is the correct response. Many times people do not heed this advice either. If for any reason the bird owner is concerned with the health and wellbeing of their bird they should be seen by an avian vet if there is one available.

As said we cannot verify anyones certifications or licenses and they may want that information to stay private.

There's an old saying that free advice is worth exactly what it costs. I find that most of the advice given on this Forum is a whole lot better than that. Most everyone speaks from experience, and some of us have a lot of years of it.

It occurs to me that an avian vet might not want to identify him/herself as such on the Forum for fear of being overwhelmed with PMs from worried parronts.

There are tons of articles on the web and people read them and think its the bible .
If the OP wanted a vets advice , they should have asked one. Everybody has their birds best interest at heart here and we try to give the best advice and opinions but it is our job to do the research or if we are that unsure , we should be wise enough to ask a avian vet.
Its just like if someone here told you that smoking is good for you ,would you start
smoking ? But this is just my Opinion.

The advice in question was to feed a Lorikeet seeds... In my time on here, I have never seen that...

There is, however someone on here with 'lori' as part of their name, who has a GCC...

Maybe it was just a misunderstanding..

Even if someone suggested to feed a Lorikeet seeds, surely someone else would have said that these birds are nectar eaters... ???

What was the word for someone who goes on forums just to start trouble ?
Someone who finds a topic that they know will attract more posters to react and argue with them ? Am I using the wrong description ?
Arent we supposed to say something to a mod if we think there is one one the forum ?
What word am I looking for.
Anybody ?
