Is it possible to have a system that posts could pass through in order to detect replica posts and prevent annoying spam from flooding all the threads before it happens? Very annoyed by todays spamageddon! :smile040:

THE RULES ARE CLEAR

Posting in Appropriate Forums:

Please post your topics in the most appropriate forum. If you post a thread that would be more appropriate in another forum, a moderator will move it for you. However, please do not make the moderators do this for you. Use your judgment to determine which forum(s) best suits your topic.*

Posting the same thread topics in more than one subforum is not allowed; this is considered cross-posting, which is grounds for having one or all cross-posted threads to be deleted.*

Advertising on Parrot Forums:

If you wish to advertise your business or services "this includes private messages" on Parrot Forums you must

#1 Get permission from the Admins on Parrot Forums*

#2 Become a paying sponsor of Parrot Forums

Links

Posting links to competing sites, forums, and other sites that sell or solicit anything is not allowed. Occasionally using the name of other sites or even posting a link to a pertinent thread or a specific item from another site is acceptable, but repeatedly referring to other related sites is considered SPAM and will not be allowed. Users are not allowed to link to other forums in signatures, posts or PM's in effort to generate traffic to a competing site. This will be up to the discretion of the Parrot Forums Admin and Moderator Staff, and you may be notified if action needs to be taken.

Very true, but the Mods do a great job catching offenders!
Remember, when you see an obnoxious violation, try to figure out who is currently active and send a note to that Mod!
I say obnoxious because the last thing we want are independent PPP! (Parrot Police Patrol)

That's a good question. I'm not sure exactly what Architecture this site runs on, but systems like that in general are difficult to put in to place without also affecting a lot of legitimate posts due to the fact that they work primarily by identifying "spam" based on certain key words or phrases.

We are parrot people here! We have a built in anti-trolling system:

Screen%20Shot%202016-09-28%20at%205.06.35%20AM_zpsx0qsqmvw.png

But really, thanks to our mods for catching trolls and removing them quickly. I think every site has the occasional issue with them. I see them far less here than some places and they are usually dealt with quickly.

An excellent idea! Perhaps the Admonistrator can advise of such software, but our sharp membership was quick to sound an alert! Thanks to SirEdwin and Betrisher for being first in the mod scene and working his magic!

LOL, love the image! But just felt the need to say it's just as much thanks to our amazing members for bringing things to our attention. We may carry the hammer, but it's quite often all of the amazing folks here who line up the nails for us.

All of us make ParrotForums what it is, and all of our great members like yourself are just as much deserving of the thanks for keeping it that way.

Hey, all. Actually, there is software that catches spammers. It is actually the first level of defense on this forum. Think of what happens here as a 3 tier system.

1st tier: Automated Spam Catching software.

2nd tier: Since an automated system is incapable of catching all spammers, the mod team checks every single member who joins this site. That can be upwards of 30 or 40 members per day.

3rd tier: We keep our eyes open for anyone who checked out okay initially, but wind up spamming away on the open forum. And this 3rd tier also includes those of our conscientious, and very much appreciated, members who notice these spammy posts and either use the "report post" tab at the top of said post's window, or pm whichever mods are on duty as David mentioned.

And thank you, David and April, for your kind words. (And April, that image was hilarious!)

Thanks for the info guys. Sorry if I came across a bit strong, I was just a bit miffed this morning! :p

As you probably know, I am new to using forums, so please forgive my knee jerk reaction rant :D I've just never encountered "spam" or "trolls". I can't even believe I just typed spam and trolls in an actual sentence!

I just thought that if people posted the same post more than once - that some kind of magical software could just go "oi - that's identical" and put a stop to it early on. But maybe that's unrealistic?

I just don't know how these things work...

I was pretty upset with those posts too because of their content:(. I think what happened this morning was a bit different than the typical "live parrot eggs for sale, just wire money to cameroon" type spam and were probably harder for a program to catch because they didn't contain key words 'typical' spam a bird forums software might look for. Computers aren't as smart as humans (yet);) As the mods said, next time flag the posts or better yet, PM a mod (you can tell who's a mod because their username is in purple on their posts and the "online users" box near the bottom right on the main page).

Thanks again Kiwibird, I'm still working out navigation! I only just realised there's a 'thank' button *duh* - so I'm gonna be busy tonight! :D

I just felt so bad for people. There were new members asking for help and advice, plus there was a post about loss and grieving - it was just so tasteless to post such content!

No shortage of tasteless people on the internet, that's for sure. People get "brave" when they don't have to take any real accountability for what they say.

A huge thanks to all our members who stepped up and reported the offensive spammer so quickly. This was a terrible thing to happen yet again but thankfully it was taken care of in a very hasty manner.

Thanks for the kind words, David and April! I really appreciated the dinosaur meme, April, nice timing.

No worries, Violet_Diva. Getting upset about posts like that is quite understandable. It's just such a hateful and mean-spirited thing to see in an otherwise positive and happy atmosphere. Believe me, we're upset by it as well.

Doublete, I'd thought this whole thing was over. I'm so sorry you have to continue going through it. But we'll continue to do all that we can to head stuff like this off as quickly as possible.

While software and moderator vetting are the first lines of defense, diligent members are deeply appreciated for their advocacy. Especially helpful are those on the other side of the globe giving coverage during the early morning hours in the US! A prime goal is to provide a safe and welcoming community.

So sorry to hear this has been an ongoing issue Doublet. I was hoping it was a one off thing. I really hope it doesn't happen again.

I just want to say that I've been a member here for several years and that was the first time I'd seen such a spam/trolling issue- which speaks a lot about the members and the moderators. Every site is going to have an issue from time to time- but all in all, I think the people who run this site do a fantastic job and people for the most part are exceptionally polite and obey the rules. It's hard to find these things in this modern world of technology.

It hasn't happened in six months. So one would think the individual had found bigger and better things to do.
