I have a suggestion: I noticed there are only Macaws on the forum title/header for the website and I was wondering if it's possible to get some other parrots on there? That would be awesome! If not I understand because it's not always easy to change things like that.

Interesting suggestion Desi, it would certainly would be a change! P.Fs has had that banner for a long time!. I wonder if it could be run as a competition for forum members parrot photos to become the new banner? :)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Yes, it is apparently a cost function and would be incorporated into the forum whenever the next major upgrade is scheduled.

This reminded me. I was reading in that post by LordTiggs, and SailBoat mentioned software redesign. I was on a different forum a couple years back that used the same software as this forum (vBulletin) and they eventually switched as they said it'd become outdated (and that was a couple years ago...). The one they switched to was "nginx". It took a LONG time to switch everything over. The forum was out of commission for a day or two and people were just talking on their Twitter, lol.

Anyway, that forum looked way different, and it took a lot of getting used to. But I don't know if I'd switch to that one, as I can't remember if it was after or before the switch we had all those spammers... That was a bad situation, lol.

I think it would be cool if they could implement these types of changes on the banner, but it might take a while to switch over when they decide to do it.

Edit: And with that particular software they switched to, there were a lot of glitches that weren't fixed by the time I left. Maybe don't do that one unless the admins like fixing stuff, lol. :)

Years ago when I was on here, I had a BFA I noticed the activity on the Macaw Category. I read posts and.......subsequently, Coincidentally, Rudy is the reason I am back!

I noticed right away, that the Macaw category is almost dead comparitively to what it used to be. Ironically, I just posted some statistics tied to my own personal experience with website forums. Im sorry... Its my opinion that I feel that something is grossly amiss.......

When most non-bird people think "parrots" they're picturing a macaw. I get why they're the ones featured, though it would be nice to see a greater assortment of parrots:)

That maybe true, but in a long and detailed discussion with my employer, Julio stated your answer of a couple of years ago is still the Firm Position of the Amazons:

"I have spoken to the Kiwi on this, and he has informed me the stocky green group is happy to see macaws as the face of the forum. Takes the focus off them, as they wish to conspire against us humans behind the scenes and not be in the spotlight/public eye:16:"

The little symbol next to each unread thread or forum or whatever is ALSO a macaw. Just thought I'd throw that out there. #macawsarenottheonlyparrots :32:

Thanks for that information, Scott.

Scott, from what I remember, open the code, find the .jpg (or equal) paste a new image. I understand a lot of it is proprietary however, usually images, titles, colors are interchangeable.

Okay I am rusty with code on this vb. however here is a bolded example that I think needs changed. Someone with vast more skills than I can grab the correct code and replace it with something else. It's not hard to do, but it needs basic skills..

But let's face it...Conures are little hams and would love to be in the spotlight. They don't want to conspire behind our backs because they're used to doing bit to our faces!

And a scarlet at that! Of course the symbol needs to be a macaw, but a blue and gold would really class the place up. #parrotforumsunfairtoninmacaws #whodoscarletsthinktheyareanyway #blueandgoldrules #aregreenbirdsevenparrots #thatsnotasunconureitsachristmasornament #justhavetheRickeybirdtakecareofit #dontgetNigelinvolvedyoucantaffordit #downwithmacawhegemony

I don't think it would be that simple since it's PHP, but I'm not sure. Never learned much of that stuff. I'll stick with client-side thank you very much. ;)

But I do agree it should be easy to change. Probably a property in the forum software somewhere.

That is two galaxies away from the knowledge base and access level of a mod! We're totally independent from the administrators and live across the U.S. and Canada. (Edmonton, California, Ohio, Michigan, and New Jersey! Admin is in Texas)

That is interesting to me too. Administrators typically post on forums with a screen name. Mods are their point of central contact.

The last forum I moderated on was worldwide catering to to a cottage industry within snow resorts. Almost all the changes were made by an administrator, And they were constantly upgraded every six months. It was a pain trying to get a consensus amongst the mods.

If you dont believe me, ask Rudy

Believe me or not. Changing the banner is easy cheesy, it is the near equivalent of changing the background color or font.

adding or changing categories and other functions like albums is more complicated.

Send me the code. I will bet myself I can change the banner on all the pages currently affected in 15 minutes or less. You can run it on a separate machine. It is that easy cheesy. All web pages are written in HTML

Someone is pulling yalls legs.

Then again it might be of a proprietary nature where you cant make changes unless you pay the pied piper. I thought Paskiandride used this board. Could be they changed since changes aren't easy to make and or costly.

Time to change formats

That's a flight of fanciful supposition. First you postulate the admins are lying to mods and members, then you suggest it might be a cost issue. Or maybe the changes aren't easy.....?

Have any proof, or just enjoy stirring the pot?

About 500 lines down in the page source you see the references for the two images in the header. They are just jpg files. IN THEORY the images could be changed by uploading two replacement images with the same name. That's THEORY.

In practice, even such a minor edit as this can break a website. I've seen entire networks go down for less. And if I was the one who broke something, I was the one who would be there until 5 in the morning fixing it back again. Because, you know, somebody erased the backups because they needed space to save the photos from a company outing. There are any number of reasons why a simple change can change a site. Files get corrupted, crap happens. I wouldn't do even such a simple change without having a full copy of the site offline to test, and two full site backups, and even then it would be changed after hours. Because stuff happens, and is most likely to happen during the most mundane of tasks.

If I were the admin, I wouldn't want to do it either. It's not a functional change. It's something I would roll into a future version along with some useful changes or performance enhancements. There's a risk of breaking the site, and the only advantage is pleasing people who want a different header, and a likelihood of pissing off the same number of people who like the banner the way it is.
