Loud Music

Can loud music over long term damage a birds hearing? My galah chills in my room most of the time and often have music pretty loud.(And its quite bassy, if the vibrations can make any difference..)

I've tried a google search but there seems to be conflicting answers.

I'm not an expert, but in my opinion I would say anything above a comfortable listening level *can* be harmful, as birds are more sensitive to sound, and to different types of sounds that we are. And if you're starting to think "Hey, this is pretty loud." Then I betcha the bird is thinking that, too. I never play loud music around my birds, but I'm also in an apartment so I don't do anything too loud or bassy anyway.. haha. But I'm no expert, that's just how I look at it personally with my birds. Aside from that you should be able to see if your bird reacts to different volumes in an unhappy/stressful way, and that's going to be different for everybird. Heh.

She doesn't seem bothered by it at all, and often tries to out-sing and dances along no matter how loud i have it.. (And it does get pretty loud..we don't have any neighbours nearby)

I'm just worried about the long-term damage it might cause, kind of like going to concerts years after years, gradually hearing loss without realising it kinda thing.

Yeah, I getcha. If you're really worried about long term damage I'd just find a good volume and try not to overpass it, yknow? That doesn't mean turn it up until you can clearly hear the words, then don't go higher. Haha. Just don't blast it all day every day if you're super worried about your birdie's ears, yeah?
It's good that she likes music though. My birds don't react too much, other than sometimes sleeping, or maybe some head-bobbing.. haha.

Your music would have to be REALLY LOUD... have you ever heard a group of cockatoos, don't think people typically play music as loud as their calls and 'chatter'.

I would not blare music around the birds, but just my opinion, I would worry more about the bass and turn that down more then volume...

Considering how loud parrots are naturally, I wouldn't imagine it's going to cause hearing loss. However, I could see those constant vibrations causing some kind of nervous disorder over time. Plus, do you really want him to learn how to be louder than what you consider "really loud music"? 10 years down the line, you may not be as fond of "really loud" anything, especially a "really loud" cockatoo. It's not as though they ever forget how high their voices go. It is probably best to put in headphones or keep the music at a reasonable volume when he's around to encourage him making reasonable volume vocalizations in the long term.

She's just a galah, the noise is nowhere near as loud as big cockatoos. I enjoy the morning/night time screeches, and even when shes being obnoxious mid-day i don't mind because it usually doesn't last too long. Fair point about the vibrations though.

I grew up with a goffin cockatoo (similar in size to your bird) and he was SO LOUD. You could hear Alfie 2 blocks away. Then again, my parents never went nuts with him (40 years and counting with that bird). Fair enough that some people don't mind the volume, but I know I couldn't handle a bird that loud. He drove me bat-crazy:52:

Galah's aren't quite as big as corellas, and corellas tend to have a much more higher pitched screech i've found.

Galahs are very similar in size to the Little Corella, of which we have one. Corey is extremely loud, especially around sunset. He's outside, but can be heard sever streets away. The inside birds get exposed to some loud music (in another room) but don't appear to react much, apart from the Plumhead which gets pretty loud... but then Jade doesn't need music to start chattering and screeching and hopping
