My vet said my nanday conure Jade can't have anymore nuts... not even for training! So, I have been using Jade's other favorite food... POPCORN! The problem is, she only likes the whole kernel because it is fun to crunch and take apart and dunk on her water, so she loses interest in training to play with her popcorn.

What treats have you found successful besides nuts?

Millet might work! I think sunflower seeds count as nuts, unfortunately. (She said "no seeds or nuts" specifically.)

Actually, she really likes orzo pasta... maybe I will try parboiling some so it is slightly crunchy.

Sunflower seeds aren't nuts.. they are seeds. As is millet. A small amount for training shouldn't be bad as long as she is on a healthy diet.

Is there a reason your a-vet said no more seeds or nuts? Maybe I missed it?

Various fresh foods are fantastic, apple is a sweet food that makes a good treat. Also sweet potato, squash, banana is something Rosie really enjoys. You can also make sweet potato chips in the oven without salt or grease so they have a crunch to them :D You should also check out harrison's power treats.

How about praise and kisses?

Why isn't she supposed to have nuts?

I am very interested in understanding why your bird can't have seeds and nuts. Unless there's a specific reason for this, I wonder if this isn't bad advice.

Lets be real: Seeds and nuts comprise most of the pellets that we feed our birds.
