I've got a question here. I started clicker training with my african grey and she got two first tricks [wave and turn around] really quickly. Took her only 2 days for each one. But then we started to work on "fetch" trick when she has to put an object in a box I hold in front of here and here we got stuck. We work on it for a week and nothing, just doesn't get it. What should I do now? Should I leave the trick for now and try again in couple of weeks?
Thanks.

It may help to try a different trick.

How are you trying to teach her 'fetch'?

Well, I give her a toy and hold a bowl close to her. If she drops the toy in to the bowl I click and give her a treat, if not than no clicker an no treat.

I'll try to work on something else and get back to "fetch" trick later on.

try Bird Tricks.com, or go on u-Tube and check them out.

I just got their dvd on training techniques and that was one of the tricks they show you how to achieve.

Barbara Heidenreich also has a video on training this behavior. I'm pretty sure Melinda Johnson probably has this trick in the book she wrote on Clicker Training for Birds.

I wonder if it might help some to click for simply dropping the toy so she gets the idea to drop it. Once she understands dropping the toy, then try and get her to drop said toy and get the bowel underneath her beak and reward. Once she understands she's supposed to drop said toy into bowel, move the bowel slightly away from her, and go from there.

That is very important that you do some trick that shes good at (easy trick for her) if this happened. Then leave the difficult trick and get back to it later.
It's more easy for the bird to understand if you split each difficult trick in many parts.

So one is pick up, (where you point, use different things too) one is hold, and one is drop where you point. (best is to use the same box at the beginning)
You can later on use parts of this trick to other tricks.

Good luck! :)

I just taught my Senegal to fetch. I broke it up into small steps. you want the bird to always enjoy the training session.
this is how I went about it. I started her out on her training perch. that way, she had a limited area she could move in. I handed her an object and let her play with it until she got tired of itanddropped it. I had a large bowl to catch it in and made sure to catch the object when she dropped it. As soon as she did, I rewarded her. I did this several times in a row, always rewarding her for dropping it. Then, I allowed it to drop on the ground. this time I withheld the reward and did not say a word and turned my back to the bird for about 20 seconds, so she could think about what had happened. you should always make sure your bird succeeds much more often than she fails, even if you have togoback a stepor two. once she is consistently placing the object in the container, You can gradually move to a smaller container. make sure not to always hold the container I the same spot, so she learnstogoto where ever the container is. once she is good at this, you can move to a table top, but you may have to go back a few steps until she is confident again. keep the training sessions short. 10 minutes should be long enough per session. Always end the session with a success, even if you have to go to a trick she already knows.

If she is not thrilled with the idea right now, wait a week and start fresh with a different object. also, make sure she is not scared of the object. have identicle backup objects in case one falls to the ground. birds are like small children, they sometimes make a game of dropping objects, just to watch their owners retreive them. To avoid that problem, leave a fallen object and offer an identical one. You can pick up the fallen objects later, when she is not noticing it or the session is over.

Let me know how it goes! I have only had my bird for a month. she really enjoys our training sessions and it has helped us to bond. good luck with your grey!

I was, but when im change that object from TOY to COIN my conure can fetch know.

LET YOUR bird Take that coin and you wait with the bowl until your bird drop it. and when fall that coin u can give a reward and clicker
