Binky - Cinnamon Rainbow Lorikeet
Hi! I am a new bird owner, and I have acquired an 18 month old Cinnamon Rainbow Lorikeet. I have been doing a lot of research, and all of my family members are willing to help look after the bird. I would like to start training as I would like to get her into a harness. Unfortunately, being a first time bird owner, I have no idea of where to start, and what to give the bird as a 'rewarding' treat. I don't know how to do the training, and where to start. I am very keen, and have quite a fair bit of time on my hands. If any of you know anything that can help me, or have any suggestions, please tell me!
Thanks

P.S I live in Australia and we are giving Binky (my bird) wet and dry food and pellets of the brand 'Vetafarm'. Is this the right brand/good brand?

Welcome! :)

Harness training will just take time and patience.. Don't give up! I got Fargo in september, and he only wore his harness in february! It was a long wait, but worth it :)

and i dont have a lorikeet, so i have noooo idea what they like to eat! haha

Vetafarm is good, i think lorikeets have a special diet to most parrots, but i think vetafarm does a lorikeet mix?

I feed harrisons and pretty bird as well as vetafarm.. But i don't think they are for a lorikeet.. Will double check ;)

Ok yes, vetafarm does the lorikeet mix, and so does prettybird..

Not sure about harrisons though!

Thank you Wayne361 and tab_xo. I have one question - what is target training?

If you youtube touch training or target training it should come up with ALOT of videos which will explain it and teach you how to train it :)

Basically just getting your bird to touch the end of a stick where ever you put it..

So if you were harness training, you would hold the little stick through the loop, so the bird has to go through the loop to get to the stick, which receives the reward!

I didn't teach Fargo any touch/target training, and he is incredibly well trained, so it's not a necessity.. Alot of people teach it if they have trouble getting their bird to go onto a perch, or biting issues!

Training also has vast benefits beyond having the parrots cooperation in doing tricks etc. Main benefit is bonding due to the fact you are spending lots of one-on-one time with bird doing things that the bird enjoys.

Of course ^ But i never did touch training and i have the most incredible bond ;)

It just isn't a necessity!

There are plenty of others ways to spend one on one time, and some birds actually enjoy learning difficult tricks, rather than just touching a stick with its beak haha :)

The touching the stick with a beak is what is often used to teach more complicated tricks. I don't think many teach that and stop there.
