Binky - Cinnamon Rainbow Lorikeet
Hi! I have a Cinnamon Rainbow Lorikeet, which I would like to start harness training. I have heard harness training is for people who want to fly their birds, but I do not. I would like to know that if Binky hops from shoulder to shoulder she will not disappear in the crowd. I would like to start training ASAP, but I do not know if it 'right' to train a bird that cannot and will not fly. Can you do it? Is it alright for the bird? Is it right?
Please Help!
Thanks

Is there a reason why Binky will never fly?

Harness training is not about having a flighted bird fly on a line... it is about the *SAFETY* of your animal while you are out and about.

You keep a dog on a leash/harness so that they are near you and not running off the sidewalk to run into the road where cars are passing by, to keep your dog safe from other dogs, to keep them from getting into trouble, running off and getting lost, etc.

Clipped or flighted, using a harness is a safety measure. Even clipped birds could potentially spook and take off flying.

If you buy the aviator harness, it comes with an instructional DVD. Barbara Heidenreich also has some Youtube clips of teaching a parrot to wear a harness.

By the way, the only reason Binky-Boo will never fly, is because I am not happy to let my birds fly, although I don't have an opinion (Birds should/shouldn't fly), I am not comfortable with my bird flying.

Not comfortable with your bird flying outside or just in general?? That's like saying you don't want your dog to run or your turtle to swim. Yeah, they climb and walk, but birds are meant to fly. Even if it's flapping their wings on your finger. :(
