I've seen lots of info about the Aviator harnesses etc., today I ran across this by accident and it made me go hmmm ... as the concept is proven with Falconry.

Curious to hear people's thoughts on this ... :)

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but you can't compare the legs of a bird of prey such as falcons and eagles to the legs of hookbills. A bird of prey carries food nearly 30-40% of its weight from where it was caught to its nesting site, and they have feet and legs specifically designed to do so. I highly doubt you'll ever see a parrot carrying anything in their feet from one location to another... it would be in their beak if anything. Anatomically they aren't even close to the same structure aside from general bone position, but even then bone density is far greater in birds of prey.

Plus many bird owners have those bands removed as they can become a hazard that may result in loss of blood circulation in the leg if it becomes caught or things build up in it.

I don't even own a bird, and I would never put that thing on them.

Anklets/jesses are made of leather not only for durability, but also for comfort. People have used different materials, but all the falconers I know and all of the birds I met had leather. As soon as he showed hooking the leash onto the metal band, all I saw was either the leg getting messed up or cut by the band.

My fid is kind of particular about his feet... he's really clumsy too. I'll stick to the flight suit for now. :)

I would love to buy a petite aviator for my cockatiel, but sadly our exchange rate is very bad here comparing with US dollars.

I am looking at R500, excluding shipping, which is very expensive (for me). So I carry her is a travel cage when taking her outside.

Hmm.. The first time I saw this post (a few days ago) I though it was strange. It looked ok to me, (I would have not used it on my bird anyways) but thanks to Wendy now I know how dangerous it is!. Plus, the aviator harness is used, and loved by many. Thanks for sharing! :)

Wow. NEVER!!! I didn't realize what this video was at first. Saw the image of parrot and hawk together and my heart was racing as I awaited the inevitable doom. Luckily it didn't happen for this particular video segment. I'm happy with Phoebes Aviator. It's loads safer and easier to monitor her interactions with it. Though she does still try to be sneaky and acts like she preening herself then wiggles a piece into her mouth. She still getting used to it.

You guys are the parrot experts not me, but I have to say if the material is light and has excellent elasticity, I can't see how there wouldn't be enough give to be pretty darn safe.

If the inventor of this, guy in the video, is a well respected bird expert, I don't understand why he would offer a product like this to parrot owners if it was in fact such a danger.

I'm interested in letting my CAG fly so I really want to hear the truth about these and in comparison to harnesses.

Two beautiful lovebirds called kiki and ace.
To he honest, in my experience, bop often manage to get their anklets off anyways, they can chew through the leather themselves. I don't know how many times I've had to take a bird out of its aviary and bring it in with only one anklet on. They often chew at their Jessie's as well and pull them out, and we had a barn owl once that could actually undo a falconers knot.
I don't like the look of that metal clip, even leather anklets can rub and hurt the bird if it's not sitting right and that clip is going to be moving a lot if it's attached to the end of a leash. If your going to use metal your better off actually making a metal ring with a hoop on the outside you can put a Jessie through. This way there's no friction on the inside of the ring on the parrots leg.
