I've been working with Parker for two weeks on speech training. Like many here he's a closet talker, only talks when by himself as an attention getting device.

I don't want to jinx it, but I'm seeing better-than-small steps! Here's the results so far:

1) MORE speech when by himself compared to before
2) taking him to his cage for the night downstairs, while sitting on me he says one of two things which he times to just before he enters the cage, "hey parkerdoodles" or "goodnight parkerdoodles". I get this maybe every night to every other night.
3) I just got, out of the blue while passing his playstand "good boy!"

I'm super excited! Talking on cue and in context are still a ways away, but he's starting to speak in front of me a bit more. I'll take that progress any day!

Baxter - Illiger's Macaw (hatch date 5.1.15);

Taylor - Black capped Conure (RIP 3.14.15 - miss you every day little "Girlie")
That's so exciting!

And, I'm lol'ing at "Parkerdoodles"! I won't be able to read about him or see a photo of him now without thinking, "Parkerdoodles"!

I thought it was adorable, and not something I would have ever come up with on my own - I'm horrible with names and nicknames. HE actually taught US that. His name before our home was Porker, and we didn't know until a few months after we got him that he says "hey porkerdoodle". Sometimes he pluralizes it to porkerdoodles. We changed his name to Parker, so my nickname for him also stayed similar, Parkerdoodle, sometimes pluralized.

He still more says porker than Parker. I'm working with him on that.

Oh my gosh this is so awesome!!! Can you give me some hints?? I have a brand new little guy, he is only well, lets see , he will be 8 months old in a few weeks. He does what sounds like a little kid trying to talk without opening his mouth. Does this sound familiar to other eckie owners?? It's really cute. He will answer me back in "his: language. He says somthing that sounds like, "I dont know" when I ask him what he is doing. I was told that most dont even start to talk until they are over a year. But we also have an African Grey and he likes to steal her thunder so to speak. I do have a question. Its a strange behaviour that he doesnt do all the time. Yesterday he started like play "attacking" his toys on top of his cage. I had added a new swing, because the other one was too small. He makes like growling noises. Is this something to be concerned about?? He sits in his new swing all the time, and he slowly warmed up to it so I thought.

Hello! I think we are in slightly different places, my tips may be no good to you. Parker already has a great vocabulary of 30+ phrases (he's almost 7 years old), he just refuses to say anything when people are around. He only talks when nobody is in the room, as a means to get them to come back into the room. It sounds like you're needing tips on simply teaching your little man how to talk, period. Am I understanding your situation correctly?

The growling sounds like him just playing. Sounds fine to me.

Chris that's great to hear :D! I'm glad Parker is getting a little more confident with taking in front of you! 30+ words and phrases wow, that's too impressive to keep to one's self :).

Griffin only speaks when under his cover in the morning. Never at any other time. It's cute when he calls for his friend. "Raven... Raven?" While Raven is asleep in the next cage over.

That's funny, it reminds me of how I'm a closet singer. I won't sing in front of anyone. And I mean ANYONE besides myself lol.

Aria is good at "mumbling" when I am in the other room. I can actually hear her pretty good when I am in the kitchen, since it is open to the living room, but by the sink she cannot see me. She hasn't said anything really clear yet, but she is trying. Hopefully, once she figures it out, she doesn't stay in the closet.

Parkerdoodles is so cute. I think Parker is adorable anyway, but that is the icing on the cake.
