Should I return to clicker conditioning?

Just posted this on the sticky on the subject of clicker training, but noticed that people don't really reply there much:

So what happens if say someone (me :p) got so excited with trying this clicker training that he skipped the initial clicker conditioning and went straight into target training, but it worked? Coco responds quite quickly to the target. He even moved across the cage to touch the stick. My question is: should I go back and do the conditioning or should I move forward with target training?

I would go back to basics and work the clicker. You had luck with target training but when you try another training the clicker or variations thereof will be invaluable.

How long should I stick with the conditioning before moving to target training?
