When do I stop giving rewards for potty training?

I have successfully potty trained my sun conure Molly to go potty in the sink and/or cage. I have been giving her treats for it every time she goes in an approved place which started out as a pine nut then went to half a pine nut (because I thought she was probably getting too full and not eating pellets) then to 1/4 of a pine nut and then to 1/5 a pine nut. So right now for the last week I have been giving her a tiny piece of pine nut about 10 times a day. Should I stop giving her treats for going potty all together? Or just give her a treat sometimes? I am afraid she will be upset if she doesn't get a treat for it and I want her to feel good about herself and keep doing potty in approved places. I would appreciate some advise! Thanks!

Try stopping for a day, see what happens. Keep up the verbal praise though.

I would start fading, maybe. Like only every OTHER time she gets a treat, do that a day, then every 3, etc... stretch out to a number where she seems to accept the change, then maybe stop but as Wrench said, LAVISH the praise!! If you continue to give a treat occasionally, it should stick. Good for you!
I had the Rb trained for about an hour 30 years ago, but that's a long, sad story!
My congrats!

I read the story about your potty training and it sounds interesting. Sorry it didn't work. :-( I hope Molly has better luck sticking to it.

What do you mean by "following her adventures"? Is there a place to post her adventures? That would be fun. I think I will try to ween her off them apart for a couple treats a day after she goes..you know 1/5th of a pine nut really never spoiled anyone..however I just had a thought if I want to train her to do other things and pine nuts are her favorite so perhaps I will ween her off. It's hard though because I like seeing her happy little black beak when she looks so proud of herself. Hmmm. Also another question...is it common that when she gets mad at me or annoyed she would "revenge poop" on me? It seems accidents only happen when she is mad or annoyed at me. Like she had been perfect for 4 days but then today I could tell she wanted to go to bed but I wasn't done cleaning the kitchen and she was getting pretty fed up and pooped on me! Perhaps thinking that would get her to bed asap or something lol. Well it worked.

Just for future reference for anyone else, it's best not to use a food reward to encourage potty training in my opinion. Generally an understanding of timing and verbal praise works wonders. I've done that for both my birds and both are well potty trained. The issue with using treats is sometimes birds think that they shouldn't poop and hold it in, waiting until they're in the right spot so they can get a treat. It's not super healthy, and it can be difficult to encourage the training after removing the reward.

If you know how often your bird goes or their body signals, move them to a bird-poop-approved zone and use a cue word (I use "Go Potty" with Avery and "Bombs Away!" with Shiko). If they're good talkers, sometimes they'll use the word before going to the bathroom to let you know they have to go too. That way they learn where it's okay and that if they have to go, they just fly there or request to be moved by a cue word or nip to a safe pooping location.

My birds know that towels, their tree stands, and cages are poop zones. Which means you have to be careful if you put your hair up in a towel after a shower, because yeah... that's definitely happened before. :D

But to answer your question, it's best if you've already paired a cue word with a treat and start phasing the treat out while still using verbal praise after the cue. Eventually they just learn where it's good to go. Just start being inconsistent with the treat (once every three times, once every other time, once every 5 times, etc), and see how your bird reacts.

Right. Molly has approved spots which are her cage, play stand and any sink. She really picked up on the sink thing and definitely doesn't hold it in if she has to go. I also am not able to give her a treat all the time and she doesn't seem to mind especially if she really has to go! I've already started to phase it out a bit so it's going well! She is a good girl! She can't talk yet though...She is a sun conure and they aren't known for talking but I hope she will someday.

Perfect! She sounds like she has a great grasp on what you're asking from her then, which is the most important thing. My GCC isn't great at talking either. Her vocab consists of about five words, but boy are they ever adorable. You'll be surprised when they pick stuff up and it'll melt your heart. I love hearing the gravelly "What's up baby?".
