I posted this in another thread but thought it might better serve as it's own post.

When I started flight training Parker a few months ago it was because there were too many crash landings. He would take off in fright but couldn't land (heck we had a crash landing tonight when he startled during flight training).

I made this because I wish I had this when I started, seeing what the steps are, where they lead, and how they are intertwined. So it's my hope this makes the overall process crystal clear and simple to execute, and that someone finds some semblance of help from this.

This video starts explaining HOW target training is used, but doesn't teach you how to. It uses targeting as the launching pad. If you haven't taught your bird target training, do it! It's very simple and can have many applications. There are many videos out there to teach you how to do this.

Of course I'm not a trainer, just a guy doing the best he can. Feel free to add any critiques of this technique, or add what you have done that worked for you!

Note: this is simple recall, I don't free fly and would never dare advise how to train that. If you're looking to free flight, you're better served getting training tips from someone who isn't me.

I've added and addendum to the first video that elaborates on flying away from you, and what has worked for me.

Thanks! That's one of the reasons I did it, because it's never easy to translate text to action when advising people here. Anywhere else you'll pay a bunch a money. Why not have an amateur show you for free :)

Nice job Chris. Makes me feel like I should make one or should have made one, when teaching Salty a new trick. Folks sometimes have no idea where to start. Parker certainly got 'target' down well!

If you do teach a new trick,do it! I'm tempted to show targeting with Parker. He's target trained but will only do it for a chopstick. Try using something like a pen and he either runs away or attacks it. So i could show how to start at square one if I really wanted to.
