Vinnie - Jenday Conure
Hey All,

I'm after some tips from anyone who has experience training a Jenday Conure.

Our Jenday Vinnie we adopted as an Avery Parrot who was kept with another male unknowing by the breeder as they wanted a pair.

We have had him since November so just over 7 months in that time we have had little breakthroughs like taking food through the bars but overall he stops doing these little things and you could be left standing there for 15+ mins until he may take it.

The one good thing is we have a long stick he allows us to retrieve him from high places or to put him into his cage with and generally moving him around.

We want to move towards hand training him but atm if you extend your hand towards him or it anywhere near him he runs or flys. If you turn around and go to walk away he runs towards you on the top of his cage. It's like he wants you to be around but at a distance.

We let him out of his cage daily and he perches on the top and moves around climbs back into his cage for food and water and seems happy with that.

So any ideas on what we could do to start training him, we have tried targeting he wont go near the stick, clicker training is a tough one as we cannot reward him as he wont take food from us.

What are you using for the training treat? The training treat, what ever that may be, should only be used for training. It should be his all time favorite thing to eat. For my parrot its small slices of pine nuts.

We have used small pieces of grape and have moved to millet now. As he wont take stuff from us and runs away from our hands so we're unsure of the best way to head into it

Sunny the Sun Conure (sept '18, gotcha 3/'19). Mr Jefferson Budgie & Mrs Calliope Budgie (albino) (nov'18 & jan'19). Summer 2021 Baby Budgies: Riker (Green); Patchouli, Keye, & Tiny (blue greywings).
I saw a good, very simple suggestion recently on youtube. (It has already helped me with my budgies.)

Rather than holding the treat in your Hand, use a wooden clothespin to hold the treat. Especially with millet this will allow you give him treat and gradually have it just a little closer to you. (Also easier to hold smaller pieces of millet that way.)
