I just uploaded a new iteration of the Wikibeaks.org site. It's very rough around the edges still. I have been thinking about what the site is meant to accomplish, which is basically to intercept people who are looking for parrots, or having problems with parrots, and provide them with information that's more information than marketing. Don't want to sell anyone on keeping parrots, don't want to dissuade someone from keeping parrots, but do want to help make sure that the wrong person doesn't wind up with the wrong bird. The humans can take care of themselves. It's the birds I worry about.

Right now the site has some direct info, and a lot of links. Right now most of the links point back to ParrotForums because there is no substitute for real time help. I will keep working on it, I promise.

If YOU were thinking of getting your first parrot, where would you go for information? What questions would you ask? What questions would you ask in retrospect, that you didn't realize mattered back when you first became a parront? What do you wish someone had told you? What would have been most helpful to you?

I want to make the site as interesting and attractive as I can, but ultimately it's a one-way conversation, and I think people would be much better served by the two-way ones here. Still, it's a good place to put practical stuff like lists of toxic plants, blank emergency contact forms, and the like. Do you have any suggestions for what kind of information would be the most helpful?

It is looking great!

I did a lot research before getting my fids, and I remember having to look all over the place to find bits and pieces. I’m a bit prone to researching a subject to bits, but I believe in being prepared before I make a commitment lol. The stuff I remember searching for was: what kind of parrots would suit my lifestyle, what hazards did I need to get rid of from my house, what kind of cage did I need (bar spacing, good brands, appropriate dimensions, etc), what kinds of toys to get, I had a million questions about diet, what to use to clean cages, appropriate carriers, how to find a vet. I didn’t know anyone that I could ask about parrots, so I read everything that I could find on the subject (much of it online) - I would have loved it if there had been a website that I could have started from to point me in the right direction :)

That's great input. I would put all that under the "OK, you are sure a parrot is right for you....what kind of parrot ... where to find such a parrot ... how to prepare for the parrot ... " path. This really helps me fine-tune the flow of the site. Right now it feels fairly random to me.

When you were researching, what were the most helpful sites? I have links to PF before anything, but there are other places such as Avian Welfare Coalition and World Parrot Trust that are incredibly useful as well. The more links, the more people will research, the better the chance for a good outcome. WikiBeaks is a rescue prevention organization above all.
