Parronts of Prematurely Passed-On Parrots...

I have a main avian vet (a truly world-class, renowned guy). On the (GREAT) advice of members here, I also maintain contact with three others (one's an avian vet, and the other two just "see birds") ... just to have back-up in the unlikely event that my main guy is missing in action during an emergency.
But anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...
I took the senior psittacine Rb (who's band-documented to be one generation out of the wilds of Patagonia) in for a well-bird visit to the (alternate) avian vet, and he made an interesting comment.
He was remarking on the Rb's age. He said... (closely quoted)...
"Birds of your parrot's age have tremendous advantages due to wild popultion vigor. He's straight out of the wild and strong genetically. Many birds, especially pet shop birds, bred these days, are so compromised due to inbreeding or careless breeding or inept breeding, you just don't know. Of course there are magnificent exceptions. And many awesome breeders. But anybody who rescues a bird these days from a bad situation should feel good about giving the bird a chance."
I would add... "And if it is a too-quick exit... hey, they psssed on while LOVED."
Loved.
And that's beautiful.
Yeah, the bird factories continue. Who knows what the solution for that is... buttt...
A bird-soul got rescued.

Having experienced the spectrum of Amazons, from a wild caught Adult to hand weened chick. I have seen a clear reduction is the physical health, i.e. their abilities to fight-off illness. I have not experienced the most recent, ill-conceived, cold-hearted, dumping of unweeded chicks into the hands of 'new' Parrot Owners with little more than a 'few' minutes of basic training.

With great praise for those 'few' Breeders who still do it right - Thank-you!!!

The fastest way to halt the 'Mills,' the 'pushers' of un-weended is to simply STOP buying their wears! Just STOP buying! It is really that easy!

The million plus Parrots sitting, waiting for a home that will simply love them and provide them a "Forever Home' will more than fill the demand for Parrot for a long enough time to bury the 'Mills' and 'pushers!.

The answer is so very simply: Provide An Older Parrot A Forever Home!!!


FYI: I have experienced the knowledge, of their knowing, that they finally, are being Loved!!! They Know!!!

So many misunderstood and neglected birds, too few homes. Steven is correct, a more educated population would make wiser and more compassionate choices.

Interesting observation about wild vigor. My two parent Goffins were wild-caught and are extremely hardy. Both are self-assured and magnificent fliers. Hopefully their three hand-fed babies received a good genetic mix. Sadly, they were great incubators but crappy parents - all three offspring were abandoned after 2 to 3 days and were hand-fed round the clock.

ive had one of each...in both birds and dogs...and im sold...never a breeder baby again, always a rescue/rehome. Wrangler gave me a kiss this morning while my husband watched. It wasnt prompted, I was just doing my morning routine and Wrangler came down off his cage and as i helped him down he leaned in and touched his beak to my lips. Deliberate, but gentle. My husband commented on how much W has changed over the last year and how lucky he was to land with me. He knows he's got it good, and that makes me feel terrific.

Cooped, you just made my day, and THEN some...
That was magic.
