1st visit to the vet!

I just wanted to share our 1st experience at the vet today. Russell is our 4 month old baby CAG, we got him from a breeder about a month ago, but one who didn't do a vet check which is why we got him so cheap. So today was his first trip to the nice Dr. he got a thourough exam but he wasn't impressed with the big bad towel put over him to trim his beak and nails. I was relieved to know I have been feeding him sufficiently, actually she told me I was over doing it so I have to cut back. She said no news is good news with the blood and fecal test so I hope I don't have to talk to her for another 6 months! When I told her the last bird we had was a budgie about 5 years ago (Jingo is in birdy heaven ) she was surprised we upgraded to such a high maintanance bird, but I did do alot of research and it was not a spur of the moment choice. Anyways just a proud parent sharing our moment.

Sounds great. Better to be a bit overweight than under - especially when they're still growing.

Just make sure it's healthy weight and not all seed-fat.

Thanks AD, Dr. says that because he's on a primarily pellet diet there are no worries, that of course is in addition to his fruits and veggie's. He does eat seed and would prefer it but he only gets it as a treat, in fact I've just started training and the seeds are very useful with the sessions.

Hoping you will read my response, would you have any suggestions on how I can provide a calcuim supp? Anyone who knows please advise.

Did the vet say he needs more calcium?

There are concentrated supplements available if he has a deficiency but if its just regular maintenance a good pelleted food will have some. In addition egg shells have lots of calcium, broccoli as well, same with most dark-green leafy veggies. Pet stores also have 'grit' for birds which is granite and oyster shell (lots of calcium).

No she didn't suggest it but I've read that greys are prone to be calcium deficient so I wanted to be proavtive and start him on something before it became a proble. I meant to ask the vet but I forgot.

Always good to be a little "big." As he grows he'll get smaller - he'll use the extra food in growing and excersizing.
