A couple Beak questions

I was going through past threads and there were questions about beaks being overgrown or taking a bird in for a beak trim. At 10 weeks, I am sure this isnt a concern yet. My question is how do you KNOW when its too long and what do you do or is there anything you can do to keep it from happening.
I have the sand perch to help with his claws.
What is the cuttlebone for? Is that a beak file? Its okay to laugh at me, it wont hurt my feelings any

Beaks don't get overgrown in healthy, active birds. The 2 main causes of overgrown beaks are nutritional deficiencies (we're talking DECADES in the making and usually all seed diets) and lack of toys to chew on (again, YEARS in the making). There are also a few diseases that can make the beak overgrow, but those would be identified at the first vet check.

Things you can do to keep your birds beak in good shape? Feed her a nutrient-packed diet full of fresh foods and make sure she has toys to chew on. The pedicure perches help too Kiwi always wipes his beak on his, which also keeps it nice and smooth Another thing to note, occasionally their beaks get a little flaky/jagged looking. It's normal. Their beaks grow like fingernails and sometimes get chipped and/or flake a bit when a bird is playing/chewing.

Thank you. Gollum goes for his first visit on Monday! I found a wonderful Avian Vet not that far. (I am still not sold on the name Gollum... we will see)
