hi you parrot parrents.

My user name is Aandeg. It means crow in the Ojibwe language. I choose it because my last bird was a crow named Aandeg. I've had several crows over the years. Usually they stick around through the summer and leave in the fall with their crow families. They have always been outdoor birds who share their time between me and their crow families.

Aandeg however was different. I got him from someone who took him away from his family's area. He never bonded with the crows in my neighborhood and became very attached to me. I had him for several years, he was part of the family. He went everywhere with me, riding in the car, on the boat, between two houses. I really loved that bird.

He died this summer from a stupid and negligent five minute mistake of mine. I was heartbroken and full of guilt.

Crows are wonderful pets, smart, friendly, playful, and very loyal. BUT... it's highly illegal to keep a crow as a pet. at any time he could have been taken from me and destroyed. Just one officious law enforcement officer could have ended our relationship. Having a pet crow makes one paranoid, better to let him live outdoors sharing his time with his wild crow family.

I may still acquire another corvid friend someday but right now i'm considering an indoor bird. One who won't fly away in the fall or succumb to the hazards of a tame bird in a wild environment.

So I bought a little green budgie from a pet store three weeks ago. He still has bars on his head. unclipped. He is fairly tame, steps up to a stick, eats millet from my hand. flies round the house but is pretty easy to return to the cage. doesn't quite trust my hands yet. I think we're bonding.

Ive had several budgies over the years and enjoy them a lot but I'm considering a larger parrot. Ive been reading up on different species. Conures, caiques, quakers. small to medium sized parrots. So any help you folks can give me in making a decision will be appreciated.

I've got a lot to learn about parrots but have some experience with other types of birds. Hope you guys can help me out.

Hello and welcome! I enjoyed reading your introduction. I'm so sorry for your loss of Aandeg. Your budgie sounds adorable, what's his name? We'd love to see photos. There are so many wonderful small and medium species to choose from. Enjoy your research and if possible, try to visit some of the species you're interested in. Best of luck in your search for a future companion.

the budgie gets called "swee dee." Not "sweetie" but like the sound a chickadee makes in the spring.

There's a parrot adoption site nearby. They require a volunteer commitment before adoption. It's a good idea. I can go meet several different kinds of birds before selecting one. Even if I don't adopt from them its a good experience.

I also think you might find satisfaction along with a hands-on parrot care education from volunteer work with a rescue.....good luck.....

It was interesting reading about the crows in your introduction! How wonderful! I'm sorry about Aandeg.
There is a member here who has an African Pied Crow. Hopefully she'll see this.

There are so many nice small and medium parrots to choose from. It's great the rescue has people volunteer first. Good first hand experience.

I was just reading about NiRD's pied crow, beautiful bird. Wish I could afford one. I can understand why we need the migratory bird act but I can go out and kill all the american crows I want yet can't keep one as a pet. that's a little crazy.
