hello parrot owners :D I'm new to the forum and need advice in buying and owning a small parrot but I don't know which one to choose as there are some many of them I would like to own one that is very sociable and can talk. I'm home most days as my shifts are 4 days on and 4 days off and work 7 hours of the 4 days on. I had certainly owned a budgie named sky but unfortunately he had passed away last night in my hand :( My hubby said he would buy me another budgie at the weekend but I don't want another budgie. So I'm asking you guys if you can help me choosing a small parrot please and advice I will go through the forums list to see what i can find. Thanks lorri Sorry about the misspelled on advice

hey lorri and welcome, sorry for your loss of sky :(

how much effort are you willing to put into your parrot??

you really need to be looking at the different breeds out there an choose one that will suit yours and your husbands lifestyle, and cross reference any info gathered, as what i call sale sites do not often put out the negatives.
i've read meyers are nice little ones :) an look similar to my sene though not sure there talkers as such my sene isn't a talker

i've only got a 2nd hand sene i call nut :) (her name is angel, but she aint no angel!) lol
she really prefers men! so will be rather aggressively forward to any grown man that walks into the house, luckily because of all the time and patience i have spent with her, she is not aggressive to me (for now) as she is out of season, her season is between nov to feb, and she bit everyone equally! even my man her fav person. she chewed her feathers, and is currently chewing her way through my house :) but at least its not her feathers

she is flighted, and has a lot of out of cage time when we are at home, longest she has been stuck in a cage is 7/8hrs but that was a rare day when we where all out of the house, but i made sure she had tons of stuff to chew on in her cage!

i know i sound rather negative, but i wouldn't live without my nut! even my poor son loves her to bits though she is currently chewin him to bits lol and as for my man he just sits about loving the attention she bestows on him!!!

The best way to check out various species of birds is YouTube. You will have the chance to see which ever bird your looking at interacting with people. Also you should never get a parrot because you want a bird that takls, Some do and some don't even if they are touted to be the best talkers. Sue said her Senegal isn't a talker, while my year old Senegal talks up a storm. Senegals are great talkers, but you can get one that isn't.

If your looking for a smaller parrot or bird that has the ability to talk, I would look at the following, Cockatiels or Conures, both have the ability to talk. Now whether either one will once you get it is unknown. I would make sure and get a bird from a local breeder that is being hand fed. If you have a breeder in your area, ask if you can go by and help with the hand feeding of your little one (once you've put down a deposit of course. Most breeders would have no problem with this and it will give you & your bird a chance to bond through feeding rather than to your breeder.

I would stay away from used or second hand birds unless you have experience or a lot of time on your hands to work with them. Als, as far as socialized birds, that part will be up to you to work and continue to work with any bird you get to maintain socialization.

thanks guys for your response, hubby and I had talked it throught. whilst he was in bed I had a good look through the net to find a suitable parrot for me there has been a couple a came across and once read through the info on them they wasn't for me. I had decided to get a cockateil as only the male can talk but both sexes are very socialable in the parrot family plus I had them in my youth. So I have some expereince in caring for them. I did have a look on sengal parrots and they are lovely birds to own:D
Mike the amount of money I'm willing to spend is roughly £150 to £200. Thanks for the warm welcome and adice:D
Suebee your parrot sounds like my bunny chewing on everything that it sees lol :D I'm pleased she's not attacking you so much this days :D

lol lorri glad to help :) and yes nut is exactly thet nuts lol but whatever she gets up to and no matter how naughty she is, she's my little nut bird :)

i was going to say a cockatiel! sorry about sky. post pic when you get your new baby xxx

I'm so sorry to hear of your Sky passing, I know to well the grief over the loss of a pet. We lost our 14 year old lab 2 days before Christmas. We were both heart broken, but once Tiki my second hand Senegal came to live with us and honored us with allowing us to be his parronts was the bestes day ever.

Senegals are great and a lot of fun, but they can be a handful if allowed to do what they want and not properly trained. If you look into a Senegal, please get one that is hand fed and hand tame. I'm all about rescue birds, but only experienced bird owners should attempt a rescue bird or a second hand bird that is no longer socialized.

Good luck and Cockatiels are one of my favorite birds, I used to raise them years ago. I wasn't a breeder, I mainly gave them away to folks. It was more of a hobby for me. Yes, the males have the ability to talk more so that the females. But I have seen a few females that talked, but it was rare. To me, Cockatiels are more even keel and easier to socialize with all members of your house hold.

Finally!!!! Someone is going with Cockatiels!!!! You will love it! Sorry about Sky, its tough when you lose a bird or any pets. Cockatiels are wonderful birds, try to find one that's handfed in your area, much easier to socialize. When you get one that isn't hand reared, it takes work and some times it may not work. I have a mean male that I can not train... I used to raise them many years ago and it was such joy to have them around. The male sings and calls for you when they needs something. Ive told my partner how much fun they were for so many years and we finally got some last year from people that were allergic to them. My partner loves them. We drove quite a distance to pickup these babies also I place some of them in new homes too and those people love them as much as I do. I keep people's numbers when I come across good ones for adoption I give them a call. I show them how to clip wings and nails. I do them all before letting them go to their new home. I do hope you enjoy them as they are wonderful little birds that's full of attitude.

Thanks guys for the sympthy of my little darling sky :D I had a good look on the net and came across a breeder very close to me and also he does hand rear them and tame them too. I had rang him earlier today but no answer but hubby rang this afternoon and he does have 2 grey boys left which I am considering in seeing them within 2/3 days time. when sky was alive he wasn't a every social budgie he had a habit biting my nose and lip that I didn't care as long i loved him like he love me :D

Good luck! I hope you find that special baby! :)
