Amazon screams

Hi! to all parrot lovers and those lucky enough to have an Amazon parrot in their life. I have an Amazona Farinosa (mealy Amazon) he has been in the family for about 7 years now. He wears a ring that was put on his leg in 2004 in the Netherlands (split ring, probably a wild caught) so I don't know his exact age but I would say around 20 years old since the past owner had him for 10 years. So when I adopted him he was a problem bird (feather plucked, mutilations on the skin, a big bitter and a big screamer) and in general the previous owner gave him away scared that the bird would die in his backyard. It took time for Kokoriko to trust me, about a year to be able to handle him without any bitting but eventually he let me do whatever I wanted to him, even hold him steady for the vet to draw blood for tests and no bitting. Mutilations and feather plucking has stopped almost completely This year (on and off they occurred over the past 6 years). He is still a seed eater as he was not taught to eat greens and fruits but he will eat an apple and Cherrys without complaints. He still screams daily at allot of things (when I'm on the phone, when he hears or sees my baby boy, when he hears people talking on the street etc.) don't think the high pitch screaming will ever stop... what I have learned from Kokoriko is that Captivity is probably the worst thing that could happen to a wild bird.
I just wanted to ask if anyone has tackled those high pitch screams in anyway.

Oh how special to have a mealy. The amazon experts will chime in soon but thank you for all you've done for such a bird!

My first parrot OWA was a wild caught bird. He would scream also.
I think the number 1 thing that helped reduce his screaming was having company of another Amazon parrot.

I am sure there will be people who disagree with this but it was my experience with Plumas.
Getting my YNA did not really help but after I bought/rescued Pacho (female RLA) they became buddies if not actual partners.

After that the only time they would scream is if we (people) all left the room suddenly.
Then we had double the noise (both would scream)

You have a Mealy!!!

Mealy's are the Heart-throbs of the Amazon World! The mystic big Guys and Gals and true lovers that set the bar for Amazona to live-up too! In short, they are the Big Amazons, with the great big Hearts of Gold! Some of what you have already just began to see! If not for their well-hidden flash colors, they would be everywhere. But, since they do not have the bright colours of their fellow Amazons, the 'designer' Owners left them behind! Their Loss!!

Will the Screaming Every Stop? It will as soon as all of you begin communicating like an Amazon Family! Amazons communication all day long with each other: Hey, where are you! I'm over here, what are you doing, I'm looking you! Why are you looking for me? Cause I can't see you! On and on and on!

An Amazon's morning starts with lots of how are you, did you have a good sleep, are you ready to eat, etc...? Everyone gets to greet the Amazon! Those that leave, have several minutes revolving around, I'm going out, but I'm coming back, multiple times! Returns are just like getting up in the morning lots of I'm home, I missed you, etc, etc, etc... The individual(s) home need to keep a fair amount of contact calls going through the day!

As things settle down, pay close attention to what he then begins to communicating about! As you said, people outside, someone in the side yard. Animals in the yard, a member of the family coming home. The more you tune in, the more you will become aware of the World around you!

In truth, I like a noisy Amazon! I like the chatter they create in the house, especially when they get everyone communicating not only to him, but each other! Wild Caught Amazons have a depth of language that will turn into a delight to hear as multiple and varied sounds begin to develop meaning to you as you place specific sounds with specific things happening.

If your Amazon is not located, so that he can see the family the majority of the time, please move him to such a location. At first along the outside edge until he becomes adjusted to your homes life style!

"Understanding Body Language" is currently the first Thread in the Amazon Forum (found highlighted in light blue). Sit down with your Amazon next to you and Read It Out Loud to your Amazon! Amazons Love to be Read Too! Use it when every you need to read something, anything! They do not care! They see it as 'us time' and you can multitask! Translate it so that everyone in the family can read it out loud to the Amazons. The important part is that they are close to the Amazon! Once again, for the Amazons its Family time! Note: The Goal is to understand their Body Language as if it is your first language! Understand that you will come back to this Thread over and over again for a refresher.

NOTE: Understanding Body Language, is the most important part of understanding the Body Communication that all Amazons have! That Thread presents the 'Foundation' in the basic Body Communications that your Amazons is providing you! The combination of learning their body Language and the Vocal language will greatly change your family’s interactions with your Amazon.

Remember: It is NEVER the fault of the Amazon! It is ALWAYS the fault of the Human(s). Approach every interaction from this 'vantage' point and you will more quickly determine what you are doing Wrong and Correct it!

You will know when your Amazon is really into you! Its comes when you understand, in fact, you are Owned By An Amazon!

We too love it when Salty is in his 'chatty' mood. Its amazing the sounds that one parrot can make. Human words mixed up with AMazon chatter, mixed up with what Salty has picked from watching youtube videos ( no kidding!). Yes sometimes it builds into a cresendo of screaming, at which point we sing to him, and that takes him down several notches in volume.. Nope , wouldnt trade his noisy little self for a quieter parrot. . Sailboats is giving you golder advice - do what he says, and come back in a month, I will bet that your relationshp has done a 180.
