Amazon weights

Hey guys I weighed bonkers for the first time today and he is 479 grams I am just wondering out of all of your Zons what species he is closest to. Also I am curious as to how heavy your Zons are because I think he is pretty big for a RLA but it's pretty hard to find consistent numbers of what they are supposed to weigh.

Yaaa, that's on the heavy side for a RLA. He is at the upper end of the big Blue Front Family of Amazons. My DYH Amazon (flyer) is at 510 -515.

Be careful when you are weighting your Amazon! Afternoon /evening weights can be all over the place. The best time is in the morning after their morning movement and before they have their morning meal. For our DYHA that's as much as a 10 gram swing in his weight.

Any time that an Amazon works those huge flight muscles they can quickly pull off weight.

At this point, pull any sunflower seeds and peanuts from his diet. The major effort will really want to start once he is home with you.

Millie our blue front, is only 330 grams. She is only a little thing but is flighted and eats all the time. She is also very active during the day.

He is fully flighted so I think that is his weight with a good diet and exercise the vet said that he is the largest RLA she has seen and that you can tell that he is in good condition aslide from the mild plucking (THAT IS RAPIDLY GOING AWAY!!!) from feeling his keel bone. I am curious if he is a different a subspecies of RLA I'm not sure if there are any but he has less yellow on his face than some of the RLAs I have seen.

Your intervention of the last few weeks is only now beginning to have an affect. What his weight was and activity level is unknown to you. Consider this a starting point weight! Keep monitoring it for now! Once he is at your home and settles in, that will be the time to monitor his weight. For now, you're going to have to live with it.

Your right I just weighed him on the scale itself could you tell me how you measure your Zons I've seen some scales with perches on them do I need to buy one of these or as long as he stands still on the scale is it ok

Can you calibrate the scale to not include the weight of the perch or do you have to subtract the perch weight from the total weight.

Yup! Most good scales /professional scales have a 'zeroing' feature that auto reset to zero regardless of what is currently setting on the scale when you press the button!

Those scales commonly show-up on the used 'stuff' market. I have an item that has a know weight that I use to double check a scale. The more its off, the lower the value. Understand that to a point, it doesn't matter as long as it repeats that value. From there it is a simple +/- to get to a know weight.

FYI: This type of scale have a darker use and any 'used' scale you may buy, clean it very well!

Goofy is at the very top of the "average" weight for a yellow nape. The last time we weighed him he was 685g. The vet said, and I quote "He's not obese, but he's definitely not missing any meals". I've been on a much more serious push to get him accepting a healthier diet since then.
