I've always loved African Greys, and I got to know a very charming one that my parents kept for a friend while he was assigned overseas for 3 years. I'm also thinking about acquiring a second bird (through rescue or rehoming).

1. What is the general track record of Amazons and Greys getting along? I read somewhere that parrots from different continents tend not to get along, but if they are both captive-bred, would it really be an issue? My DYA has lived previously for several years in adjacent cages to a Cayman Parrot, Gala Cockatoo, and a Quaker-- all of which he pretty much ignored. However, he has never been allowed to mingle with other birds.

2. Are there disease/health issues I should be aware of in an interspecies household? Each bird will have his own cage, but in close proximity.

3. Are there any other species that mix well or horribly with Amazons?

4. If given the opportunity of a "trial run" to let the potential new bird live with me to see how everyone gets along, what is a good time frame in which problems will be apparent? (e.g., 1 or 2 Weeks)

I have BFA and a Grey, My BFA Sydney was kept for a short time with a Grey, adjacent from eachother, and my Grey was raised with a BFA. From my knowledge, Gonzo my grey, used to preen Murphy the BFA regularly and they got along very well, but they were raised together, though I believe Murphy was older by a few years, they spent 18 years together!

So far Sydney and Gonzo interact just fine, though I don't let them interact if I'm not in the same room. I will separate their cages a few feet apart so they can play by themselves and there hasn't been any issues besides some jealousy.

They're similar sized so in theory they would get along, but it is also dependent on your own bird's personalities, so I would try to get your DYA socialized with some more birds first and see hows he does!

I also have/had a 'zon and a Timneh.

My Gray passed away a few months ago at 27,my BFA is now 27.

Smokey was a "first bird" had her about 1.5 yrs before getting Amy.
They lived on opposite sides of my living room and my Grey was VERY jealous of AMY.
Smokey would torment poor Amy at any chance she got :o

That's just MY birds though.

Jonesy The Cockatoo Man and Amy get along well.

My CAG and my lilac crowned amazon are best buddies, as in, can't pick up one without picking up the other one...

Properly socialized together it should be fine. But, as always, depends on the birds...

IMO you would have a better chance of introducing a amazon to a CAG then a CAG to a zon. All depends on the two birds. At least 2 weeks, the honeymoon period needs to expire.
