Last night I dyed my hair and used an auburn shade with red in it. This morning, my usually sweet Talli (The BHP) is attacking me every chance he gets! It is like he has never seen me before and is actually flying off his cage to get to me. No one else seems to care, but apparently I have offended Talli with my colour choice. Has this happened to anyone else? Do I just wait it out? Or am I doomed to finding a hat to wear until the dye washes out?

Both my sennies act like that when I wear a hat. I wear a ball cap fairly often, but I've learned to take it off before entering the house. Not sure what you can do, if it would work to change it back or let it grow out.

Sorry Talli is so upset :( I think our birds don't always understand when our appearance changes unexpectedly. I would give it a few days to see if he eventually gets used to it, but if not, perhaps see if theres a hat to wear he responds more favorably to, and I guess you know what color not to dye your hair again:eek::rolleyes:

Poor Kiwi becomes extremely offended every time I don't have my glasses on (as I wear them all the time). I don't think he 'knows' who the strange woman is in his home, so he's going to let me know I'm VERY unwelcome here lol:52:

Terry, from what I gather (both my experience and on a Pionus forum), it does seem like Pi's are one of the species who like to be "fashion police" more so than some birds. Not saying it only happens with Pionus of course, I'm saying MY PERSONAL experience :)

I understand that this 'knee jerk' behavior from the birds must be rooted in how they are 'wired' as prey animals. Some are naturally more sensitive to appearance than others. Or, it can have to do with factors such as environment and learned responses during the birds' life. Speaking to many Pionus owners, Pi's seem especially prone to changing looks (like when hubby first wore a hat around Raven).
Robin and some past birds on the other hand... You can wear a Halloween mask, fro wig, florescent kimono (not that I do that :52:), and come in juggling, and they won't bat an eye. Well, the juggling would scare him lol :)

Ps... I bet your hair looks great! :D

I used to dye my hair red, the good news is the red shades fade faster than any other color so it shouldn't be too long before Talli is more comfortable with it. I would sweet talk and hand out treats I am sure Talli will begin to understand it's you under there.

Thank you for all the advice:)
Talli is still angry, he will take a treat from me then immediately puffs back up. I am hoping that some of the ...shall I say brightness?...of the colour will start to wash out tonight. I tried a hat that I used to wear to keep him from getting tangled in my hair, and Talli was happy but Ekko and Xander freaked out, and Darwin wouldn't stop screaming.
Looks like Talli will have to learn to deal..lol.

Thank you, Julie, I LOVE the colour...obviously Talli does not have good taste..lol.

Hiya, Terry Blossom!

Julie's thought on this behavior springing from how they are wired as prey animals is my take, as well.

When dealing with other birds, or with animals in general, body language and coloration would be very important to them. So your sweet new 'do, from his perspective, is nothing other than a body language indicator that you are excited or angry. Your "crest" has turned to an angry red, after all.

I agree with April and Laura's suggestions. I'd say try getting him acclimated to your new look for a few days. Much in he same way that you would treat a brand new bird. And treat bribery NEVER hurts.

Or, failing that, you could always just borrow one of Julie's florescent kimonos to distract him? ;)

That makes sense as well, Stephen, and I bet Julie is correct. I was hoping that since Talli loves strawberries he would be thrilled, but now I must look kind of like Darwin to him.
I am also hoping that time helps, as April suggested. He is already a little more calm, at least he isn't attacking my head anymore, I am now just getting dirty looks.

P.S - We could all probably better advise you if you provided pics of the new 'do. Just sayin'!

I will be in some tomorrow at Britty's bachelorette party and will share one, I promise:)

Stephen is right :) It's obviously not just Pionus... Just pointing out meaningless personal observations ;)

Most excellent, Terry!!! Well... so long as no scantily clad dancing men make it into said picture, at any rate.

Julie, your observations are NEVER meaningless in my book!

I agree, your observations are NEVER meaningless, Julie!
There will be a scantily clad male there, but will make sure he is not included:)
Although it is going to be quite the experience! Editing here for content..lol

Well, SOMETIMES I do catch myself in a pretty nonsensical blabbing... BUT, it is usually before I'd had enough coffee to kick the brain cells into gear. :52:
I read my posts later than cringe, or say 'oh no, that's not right' LOL.

LOLOL about the scantily clad man who you're NOT going to include haha.

I do the same with my posts sometimes..I am like, what was I thinking???
I have never noticed that in yours at all, though, Julie:)
And I am not sure why Stephen's doesn't want everyone included in those pics....
:):):)

Because some things, my dear Terry, one can NEVER unsee. :vomit-smi:

Kiwi will bite Brad if he isn't wearing his beanie. :p
She moved in with Brad a little bit before I did and it was nearing the end of summer, so before long he was wearing his beanie every day. Up until it got warm again(or more or less too hot for a hat) she always saw him with a hat. So even though she's somewhat adjusted to him without one now, she's still skeptical hah. For whatever reason she does better with his hair in a ponytail than down.
But she's always been a weirdo. Hopefully Pascal doesn't hold it against me when I dye my hair! I was planning to soon... :o

I would just watch out for red tones, Ashley!
Hopefully he will get over it in a few days:(

@Stephen...you are so getting pictures emailed to you now..lolol

Now that's just wrong! Where's the love, Terry?!?
