I always wondered this. I know they are technically right? But I always was confused about this as, there are other parakeets in the parrot family, but parakeets(budgies) are also considered parakeets, so I didn't know they were parrots. Lol, I am really dumb. Show pictures of your gorgeous Budgie parrots!!!:whiteblue::greenyellow:

Hi! I am a little confused. I'm not sure if your asking a question or if you are just making a statment? For a long time I didn't know that Budgies are parrots.

Parakeets are all part of the parrot family, essentially a parrot is any bird with a hookbill. Round where I am many people call Ringnecks parakeets and don't think of them as parrots. They only think of African Greys and Macaws as parrots

Of course budgies are parrots. There are plenty of species of parrot that are referred to as “parakeets”. For example, ringnecks (already mentioned) and all of the grass parakeet species native to Australia (e.g. Splendid, Bourke and Turquoisine parakeets). From my knowledge; the only thing that really differentiates a parakeet from a parrot is either smaller size or the fact they have longer tails, and a slightly different body build than other parrot species.

"Parrot" is the common name for the Order "Psittaciformes" aka "Psittacines". The scientific classifications of creatures goes:

  • Class: Aves (Avian)
  • Order: Psittacines (Parrots)
  • Superfamily: Psittacoidea (aka "True Parrots")
  • Family: Psittaculidae
  • Subfamily: Loriinae
  • Tribe/Genus: Melopsittacini
  • Species: Budgerigar
So you can see that Budgerigars are most definitely parrots. In fact, they are part of the "True Parrot" superfamily, where Cockatoos and Cockatiels are actually part of the superfamily "Cacatuoidea". That means scientifically speaking Budgies are more of a parrot than even a Cockatoo. Wow, huh?

More fun facts:
Family: Psittaculidae includes Lovebirds, Loris, Lorikeets, Parakeets, Rosella, and Eclectus
Subfamily: Loriinae includes Lories, Lorikeets, and fig parrots.

Budgerigar's are NOT part of the same Subfamily as Parakeets (Platycercienae). Budgerigar's are more closely related to Lorikeets than Parakeets.

Actually, there are also some parakeets under a different Family: Psittacidae, which includes Conures, Macaws, and Parakeets, all of Central and South America.

This was fun to learn. Thanks for posting on the subject!! :)

YES ! Parrots is parrots, no matter what the locals call'em

This was fun to learn. :)

Nope, my head just exploded.. :)

I explain to people.. when asked, Is that a Parrot..??

My version of genus sp? is...

Animal
Bird
Parrot
Macaw
Green Wing

So I guess for all the simpletons like me, out there... A less complicated way to explain a budgie ,,, might be...??

Animal
Bird
Parrot
Budgie
Yellow (insert color)

Uh oh....

Animal
Human
Gender
Skin Tone
Political affiliation
:)

awwwww.... this was nicely written mentioning "budgies"

Parrots are often the first birds that spring to mind when you think of pet birds. The types of bird that are included under the group name of parrots are: parrots, cockatoos, amazons, macaws, conures, lovebirds, parakeets, cockatiels and budgerigars. Many of the parrot species make interesting pets due to their ability to mimic speech. They are very intelligent and will amaze you with the size of their vocabulary and the tricks that they are able to master. The parrot group make lovely, affectionate pets with strong personalities. The different parrot species have the most splendid coloration. This, along with their fun personalities, makes them wonderful pet birds.

For budgies, it’s be more:

Animal
Bird
Parrot
Long tailed parrots (“true” parrots - including IRN/ARN, among a few others)
Budgie
Budgie

Near as I can tell, Melopsittacus is what’s called a monophylletic genus, meaning there are no other species other than undulatus, the budgie. The opposite would be like the Homo genus, where you have many types of Homos (cue snickering): habilis, erectus, sapiens, etc.

What is a "parakeet"? A parakeet is any small parrot with a long tapering tail. This includes conures, budgies, grass parakeets, rosellas, ringnecks and many more species!

Cockatiels are sometimes referred to as parakeets as well, however, since they belong to the Cockatoo family (aka not the "true parrot" family), they should not, IMO, be considered a parakeet. There are already at least a handful or more hybrids of cockatiel x galah (rose breasted cockatoo) out there, but none of cockatiel x (insert species that is not a cockatoo).

the Homo genus, where you have many types of Homos (cue snickering): habilis, erectus, sapiens, etc.

What happened to the Homo flacid species?

Homo flacidus went extinct pretty quickly. Anthropological evidence hints at challenges surrounding reproductive rates.

Don't feel dumb. For a long time when hearing the word parrot I thought only of macaws.

Most people do!

I admit, the ecologist in me geeked out big time when squeekmouse trod out the specific classifications. Love that stuff.

I had read that Parrots (Psittacenes) included everything form budgies to Cockatoos to Macaws to Conures, but I didn't know all those details until I saw this post and did some research. I had so much fun with it I started to write a lot more about the difference genus, species, sub-families, etc etc, but then I thought I was probably going overboard and restrained myself.:04:

I'm still confused about the term Parakeet also. Alexandrine and IRN Parakeets are part of the Psittacula Genus of the Psittaculinae Sub-family. While Genus Cyanoramphus of Sub-family Platycercienae are also parakeets. Even Conures are called parakeets. The best info I could find is that Parakeet is a blanket term for small to medium parrots with long tails. It comes from the french word perroquet which means "Parrot". :25:
