Hi Everyone, I just ordered the DNA test kit from Avian Biotech and was wondering if anyone has used this. My Sis in Law has used these for yrs and she swears by them, says she's always got accurate results (she uses blood not feathers) Im just curious if anyone has done them and what there experience was. While I dont want to intentionally hurt my baby, I do think a little clip of a nail is alot less stressful than a trip to the vet. Of course if a Vet trip was needed he would be there in a second. I just dont wanna have to stress him out just so I can know if he is a he or she is a she.

I have used them twice, both times with feathers. The results were really quick (it took longer for my snail mail to get there than to get the results lol). They email you the results so you know right away, and then mail you an "official" certificate.

Rio Mom...Did you feel bad plucking feathers from your baby..? I ordered both feather and blood kits. I haven't got them yet, but I was thinking that clipping nail quick would be less tramatic than plucking out 5 feathers. I don't know, I feel bad either way. I'm a Vet Tech but whenever it comes time to do something to one of my babies, I get all stupid about it...lol!

I was actually too chicken to pluck the feathers myself, so the breeder did it for me. I just brought along my kit when I went to see her. Honestly, both times (Rio and River) didn't seem to mind the plucking at all. She did it quick, and they were given lots love and kisses right after.

I have used them many times. Very easy, very quick, and minimal stress for the bird. They are at home, with you where they feel comfortable, and all you have to do is cut a toenail a tiny bit too far. Just be sure you have Quick-stop on hand.

I used them and got Lu's in a week :) I plucked feathers from her chest and it didn't even phase her. I'd feel worse about cutting her qwik! :( My dog whimpers so bad when his get trimmed even close so I can only imagine what it feels like on teeny tiny feet!! And it hurts when I bleed on my fingers so I'd rather have my hair pulled out than my finger cut haha

I wasn't sure where to pluck feathers from (big ones little ones) haven't even got test kits in the mail yet, and I'm aready a nervous mommy...LOL... My dogs lay on the floor and let me do there nails. Being a Vet Tech I guess their just like "here she comes to pick or pock at us somehow."...lol! But like I mentioned, when it comes to my pets I'm a big chicken.

You pluck the little ones off the chest. Don't pluck the big ones (wings/tail)

I use them all the time for my babies (I breed Green Cheek Conures). I use the blood from the toe nail, just a tiny bit and none of them have ever cried out. I don't like the idea of plucking feathers...but that's just me.
