I know there have been discussions about avian lights before. I’ve read threads, some studies, and articles. I know there’s some debate on how effective they are, as well as the potential to damage eyesight. Ideally, I would love for my birds to be in natural sunlight frequently, but living in Canada makes that impossible for much of the year. Therefore, I currently use a light, although in a limited way. Since I’m worried about damaging eyesight, it’s only on for about an hour each day for each bird, which my vet says is fine. The one I use is a light specifically made for birds, with two bulbs. One is ā€œfull spectrum,ā€ & one is a separate UV bulb that I replace about every 6 months. I’m just curious about your thoughts on avian lights? Do you use them?

Lightning can be controversial. I live in Texas in older home. So my problem is the opposite. The blinds and curtains block out side sun light. Otherwise especially the sun side in the afternoon will be unbearable. This in spite of a/c it will get above 100° inside with a heat index above 110°. Right now my bird room is 76° with heat off. It's 65° out side. I use a bird light 12 hrs a day. The problem with artificial lighting is the wavelength usually invisible that causes the problem. Unfortunately I put the name of current brand in my junk drawer. I did do a lot of research. My avian vet recommended that bird lightning be direct on a small part of cage. Increase area if trying to discourage egg laying. He didn't have a specific brand to recommend. I have used human artificial lighting between two CAG for over 40 years. No apparent problems noticed or at vet checks. Last year I started using a bird light.
