Has anyone ever tried Twin Beaks Aviary Herb Salad? About 2 months ago, I bought a whole pound of it for my GCC's, and after about a week or 2, they started eating it! It smells really good, and is loaded with amazingly healthy herbs. Herb Salad for birds|Discounted

WELL, my problem is, when I got the product I immediately poured it into a big Ziploc bag, and when I was about to serve them some this morning, I noticed...little MOTHS, flying around in the bag!!!!! What the heck???? is this common???? I am so bummed, I had to throw the whole bag away! If I order more, will this happen again? Was a Ziploc not strong enough to keep the moths out, or were the moth larvae already in the mix?

I will probably call MSBS and let them know what happened. Has this ever happened to any of you?

is this common????
Yes, unfortunately. The pantry moths can get into everything. You can nuke them by putting all your supplies in the freezer overnight when you bring them home.

It could have been infested at source, at manufacture or at your place. They can poke holes in packets and get in the tiniest breaches in a packet.

I agree with Strudel, but you could have simply let it sit around too long.....what is the shelf life from the time you purchase this stuff?

Good luck.....

Good question, i'm not sure...i'll just buy it in smaller batches and do the freezer thing. Maybe i'll just keep the next batch IN the freezer. Hopefully the birds didn't eat any of the larvae, although now I think of it, that's what wild birds would eat.

Thanks for your responses!

For the first time ever buying from MSBS with no problem whatsoever, I just got the same thing happen to me with a food I always buy! I never never encountered this problem and was very surprised. It came with the moths and larvae as one bag was unopened yet and I could see them flying around. The product was Goldenfeast. I would suggest you contact MSBS like I did and let them know. They need to know. Like was said before, you can freeze the food you buy before serving it to kill any possible larvae to hatch, however, the manufacturer or whoever handles the food should be aware of it so that they store the food properly.

MSBS is awesome and I NEVER had any problem before and will continue to buy from them, however, I hope to not see these pests again! The rest of my bird food wasn't infected thankfully as I noticed right away and put the moths bags in the freezer!

Thanks Echo, good to know! I agree, MSBS is awesome, I order from them all the time and have always been happy. I also highly recommend and will continue to buy Aviary Herb Salad, but will keep it in the freezer from now on!

In the mean time, you can let your feathered friends enjoy the added protein, if they're so inclined, either as moths or as their predecessors in their larval state.....my guys have pigged out during the couple of infestations we've had.....
