Hey all!

We picked up our 12 week old Brownhead parrot from the airport yesterday afternoon. He was at the back of the carrier most likely terrified after the long flight from Toronto to Vancouver. We took him home and he would not come out of the carrier on his own. He would growl with his mouth wide open when I entered his carrier but asked him to step up as I placed my finger to his breast and he did so without a problem :) He chirped very quietly and had a very small amount of water that I offered to him. He was, and still is this morning, just standing motionless in his cage up at the top near his tent. It must take a few days to get used to the new environment :? The breeder was great and did a good job socializing and weaning him tho. Joey (his name) hasn't eaten a thing but this should pass soon I suspect. He's got veggies, pellets, fruit, and a nurtiberry in his cage.

Does anyone have any advice? Should we keep him in the cage for a day or 2? He steps up without a problem but doesn't want to move around at all. Time will tell I guess.

Thanks :)

It's perfectly normal that it might take him a while to adjust. When I brought my Cape parrot home in August, she would pretty much hang out in the same one place in her cage. Now, she's all over it. Just give Joey some time.

Out of curiosity, did you get your baby from Soltia aviary?

Yes I did! Barb helped a ton! He's chirping away and slowly exploring his new cage :)

It's kinda funny as he is somewhat clumsy and it takes him a while to get from point A to B lol.

Thanks for the help :)

Also, Joey is puffed up most of the time... I understand that this is cause by either too low of a temperature (hes cold), he's sick, or he's tired. I will scheduled a vet appointment for a regular check up. His dropping appear normal :)

I've got the heat in our apartment set for 23*C which is slightly higher than normal room temp. Could his current unstable state cause him to puff up like that?

I also brought home a Brown-head recently. He was pretty still and kept to himself at first. Time and patience should help. Also, it's good that you scheduled a vet appointment. My little guy didn't have to travel by plane and was fine. I imagine the stress of flight was a lot for your baby to handle, and stress can increase the likelihood of illnesses. Of course, he may be just fine, but it's best to have a professional avian vet check him over to be sure.

I hope all is well and he settles in nicely once he gets used to the changes!

One other piece of advice: I tried to keep as much as possible exactly the same as what he'd known in the aviary, which in most cases is just the food. I think it can help, though, to give them something to rely on :)
