So a few weeks ago I helped a lady get some food for her conure. She told me that someone dumped the bird on her daughter at work, who then gave it to her mother who used to have cockatiels. At the time she told me she wasn't sure about keeping the bird, and I told her if she couldn't keep it, to give me a call and I'd either keep it or find it a good home.

Fast forward to a few days ago, she called looking for me, I called her back, met her today and came home with Buttercup! She's young, assumed female, so she's a little bratty and cage aggressive for sure, but right off the bat she's much better behaved than my GCC!

She never got converted to the pellets, and has been eating a pretty crappy sunflower based diet and peanuts. I intend on converting her right away as I'm sure her appetite will be good! Right now she's sitting on my shoulder preening me and giving me kisses.

Not sure about keeping her name Butter cup but not sure of a better one yet!

Love the name and she is a very pretty bird! Nice that you are hitting it off right off the bat. Congratulations.

So I decided to encourage her to come out of her cage by hanging her food on the outside and leaving the door open. Then I discovered she can do this.

That looks like an experienced escape artist. Noticed how she lifts the door and holds it open with a foot so she can lean out and get the food. Clever little bird! Suppose that now you should start thinking about locks on the doors or you might find her out and about when you come home some day.

Birds never cease to amaze me with how they can figure things out.

I'll need to padlock her in! I didn't expect her to be so smart at her age, my other conure can't get out her doors, so maybe I'll swap cages.

What a cute baby! She looks so innocent. :)

She is Awesome!!!

I also noticed my Sydney got a "Buhbye" in there somewhere. (I was about to leave to go to Christmas dinner.)

Awwww! You have one of THOSE birds! LOLOL!!

She's awesome and BEAUTIFUL!!!

Our Franklin does the exact same thing with his doors if they are unlocked! One day, we came home from work and he was out and we couldn't figure out how he did it...then one day we saw him, exactly the same way he holds the door up and dips around and just like that he's out!

I just bought some trigger snaps and lock his doors shut when we don't want him out...then he learned how to pop open his main door! LOL So that get's trigger snapped shut too!

One morning, I changed his water before leaving for work, when I came home that afternoon and sat down, I hear him lift his door, then drop it shut...over and over and over...and then I remembered for the first time, I'd forgotten to re-snap the door shut. I had to laugh...all day he KNEW that door wasn't locked and he waited until I got home to say ... "Hey Mommie! Look what YOU forgot to do!" Hahahahaha!!!

Buttercup is amazing, give her time, she's going to be worth the effort :)

Thank you! I do love her very much. I'm going to start clicker training with her now that she's comfortable, and I'm definitely going to look into getting some of those snaps!

What a beautiful conure, and so smart too! It never fails to amaze me how smart birds are. Thank you for sharing!
