I am going to be bringing home a GCC baby about 4 weeks before we leave for an 11 day vacation. Yes, I know, bad timing, but unavoidable because of the loss of another bird we were supposed to get a few weeks ago. :(

I am wondering how best to handle the care of this baby while we are gone. The main concerns being loneliness and losing her tameness. We will have a pet sitter coming in 3 times per day for our dogs, so she will get some attention, but won't be allowed out of the cage, which is large...32" X 24" X 60" high. The other option is to take her back out of our home to the bird store where she was hatched and hand fed. But I'm not sure she will be happy there since it won't be home to her anymore.

Any advice would be appreciated. Also am I going to lose the tame sweet baby because of this?

Why not just leave her at the store and let them care for her while you are gone? Then you'll have a fresh start when you get back?

We are bringing home a baby Nanday soon, he'll be weaned in about 5-6 weeks. Looking at our schedule I realized we'll be gone in early June and around 4th of July, so I am thinking about asking them to keep him an extra few weeks, as much as it kills me to wait longer. I did this at the same place when we got our GCC because of something, I can't quite remember but I think it was during remodeling. They happily kept him an extra 2-3 weeks while I visited at weekends. Maybe it's worth asking your store if they'd be willing to do the same for you. Good luck!

The store will keep her for those extra few weeks. It will be difficult not to bring her home, but I agree that this is the best idea. I’ll just continue visiting her until after the vacation. Thanks everyone.

Good deal. I guarantee you, one you're back and have picked up your birdie, you'll be much happier you did it like that!
