My little SIE baby is coming home in September, and I can't wait. I've decided on her name too: Milhouse. Now that may seem strange, but I'm always just going to call her Millie for short. She's from a breeder in Manitoba. Unfortunately she has to be shipped, but it's an extremely short flight. I'm looking into going there myself to pick her up instead, but I don't know if how the airline will like that.
I've decided to keep the cage in my bedroom, so I can be sure to have her and my cat separated when I'm not home. I would like to be cautious in the beginning.
The rest of my apartment is a large open concept living room kitchen kinda deal, though the kitchen is separated partially by a wall. This is going to be where she spends most of her time, as she'll be out as long as I'm home, which is a lot considering I work about 27 hours a week. I'm installing swings on the ceilings, perches on the walls and will be making a large cargo net to mount on my wall as well for her to play on, not to mention the java tree stand thing I will be mounting on a rolling base. My entire apartment is going to be one big jungle gym!
I am going to begin bird proofing my house soon as well. I intend buying wood to cover up underneath my couch and bed so she can't get in dark hidey spaces.
I've gutted my kitchen of all pots, pans, etc. You can't be too careful. I'm going to get glass pots and one of those heavy pans that you can never properly wash - what are they called?
She currently has 14 different toys, and her cage is coming on Wednesday. I've begun to change my own diet to get used to eating healthy, fresh foods every meal. I'm quitting smoking (almost there!
not that I ever smoked in my apartment anyway) and am going to dye my hair back to brown tonight. My hair is currently bright blue and I'd be worried about fumes from the chemicals of blue hair dye.
I've read all the books by Barbara heidenrich and every inch of Sally blanchards website, and am 20 pages of eclectus threads in as of today. I work 2x a week at my local aviary to get used to holding parrots, and I love it. I even suffered a bite from an eclectus (my own failings, obviously) and even though I bled a bit, I took it better than I'd expected.
In the few coming months I'm going to double down on preparations, just to make sure I can be the best bird mom I can be.
I'm so scared I'll totally fxck up everything.
