Baking soda and birdie bread

I am trying to find an answer on baking soda. There are many recipes that call for it in birdie bread but some groups are saying “no baking soda” and will not give a reason beside NO. I’m guessing it’s because of the sodium. I appreciate all thoughts

Baking soda is not harmful. You’ll be fine to use it.
