Guys, my grey does this every so often, but this behavior has really increased lately. He bangs his beak on the edge of the food bowl, but there's already food in it! Is he trying to tell me something? I though at first he doesn't like the food or wants his favorite seeds instead, but he proceeds to eat the food in a few minutes anyway.. Any advice would be appreciated!

Best regards

I would say he's trying to tell you something... When Enzo bangs her beak quickly against something, its generally she wants attention or simply trying to get my involvement in what she is beaking. I do the same to her though, so maybe its just something ive taught Enzo.

Do you offer veg/fruit or just seeds to your CAG?

Yeah, definitely wants attention.. that's for sure. I usually go to him and give him a kiss or a few head scratches. Then he proceeds to eat the food a bit, then back to the banging lol ... maybe I'm encouraging it more by giving him attention when he does that!

You would be surprised on how quick these little creatures of habit build associations, a few weeks ago, 2 consecutive mornings when I was taking Enzo down the stairs after shower time, I gave her a head scratch... now everytime I get to the top of the stairs she drops her beak and now expects a head scratch. Little monsters ;)

Both, at different times of the day..

No kidding! After doing this just a couple times, now every time Caesar sees me passing by, he'll climb up to one corner of the cage waiting for a kiss :D

I agree, definitely trying to get your attention and trying to make a point.
Levi has a window perch in my kitchen. He whacks his beak on the window.
I slowly approach him and ask 'what', than I gently move the perch away so he can no longer reach the window.

Some of mine will do this as obsessive behavior. They approach the bowl, tap 2 or 3 times and begin eating. If I remove the bowl for a few seconds, they will tap upon return!

Thank you for the input guys! I was worried I might have been dismissing something serious.. I'm glad it's not that!

Smokey would also do this and "woo" in her bowl. I think she was trying to tell me "Whats this crap you're trying to feed me?"

Geeeeeeez, yeahhhhh, the Rb does this all the time. I had gotten so used to it that I hardly noticed. Goes to his food bowl (a nice noisy stainless steel!), then BANG BANG BANG, then nom nom nom.

Definitely no expert, but this morning I played fetch with a Grey, with the cap off my water bottle. I'd toss it to land in front of her, she'd pick it up and toss it, and I'd fetch it and toss it back. If I took too long to get it, she banged her beak on the tabletop until I tossed it to her again. She was having fun, and it seemed like something she did to play.
