My Rainbow Lorikeet has been sitting on his perch with one foot tucked up under him, grinding his beak.

I know in Cockatiels these are signs of a content/happy/healthy bird, and I am wondering (and hoping) it symbolizes the same thing in Lorkeets? Or is it something I should be worried about?

We lost his sister (who he was rather close to) to a spider bite this morning and he has been understandably quiet all day, so i'm just worried that the beak grinding is a cause for concern.

He's had a general check over by our regular vet and she said he seems fine, although she only has limited experience with birds and isn't an avian vet. Our avian vet is 2 hours away and I can't get an appointment until the end of the week so our regular vet is all we have for the time being.

He's eating fine, and he's still up for short training sessions (still goes silly for apples :P ), and it's rather chilly today so he's been inside rather than outside and it's a little boring in here. That coupled with the loss of his sister doesn't really give him much to be excited about so I understand why he's not doing a whole lot. I just worry lol.

Thanks in advance!

Awww, sorry for your loss:( It's sounds as though the poor guy has had a rough day. Parrots are so social, and they do mourn when they loose 'family or friends'. The beak grinding is sounds like something of a 'comfort' thing for him right now. And I would expect him to be a bit on the depressed side for a while before he bounces back to his old self.

Thank you :)

I didn't consider that it may just be a comfort thing. He's definitely had a rough day, the poor baby. They're both only babies, too, just over 4 months old. I feel so bad for him :( But he's been getting lots of extra cuddles today and he seems a little better already. He was playing with his toys before and hopping around and chattering to himself.

I've got his cage sat next to my 3 month old Cockatiel's cage and they've been chit-chatting to eachother through the cage bars, so he's at least got someone close to him tonight when we're in bed.

We miss Jade :( She was such a smart little cookie. A week or so ago I was trying to teach Oscar to spin/turn around, and Jade was watching us from a short distance, and after a couple of minutes she waddled over and started doing it (while Oscar still hadn't got it yet lol). I was impressed!

Oscar seems a bit happier today. He was bouncing around his cage and whistling when I got up this morning :) And the weather is a bit nicer today so I took him outside, and he was so happy to be out there that he did a couple of hopping laps around his cage before screaming to all the wild birds haha.

Gollum is grinding her beak. Looks like she is tired and about to fall asleep but still grinding away. Is this okay for them to do? I know it is not healthy for humans to grind their teeth lol!
