What would be the best wood to use for a play tree stand? I live in kentucky in the middle of nowhere so I was just wondering if there was a type that was safer then another?? I know you have to was it and I was planning on sand blasting it? Just wondering. Also it's for a conure if that affects anything.
Thanks

mine is made out of MOSTLY ash wood from my backyard. cleaned with bleach water. then their is a peice of crab apple wood also cleaned with bleach and water. and one peice of normal apple wood from my uncles house, cleaned with bleach water. none had pesticides. i acually wwouldnt sandblast it. some parrots like to rip the bark off themselves. i only took the bark off the crab apple because the bark was kinda natsy. the wood was fine though. i dont think there is a "best" wood. if you think your bird will constantly chew the perchs instead of the toys, you can use a harder wood to make them last longer. but as long as its safe it should be alright. like i said, i made mine out of ash, crab apple and apple. and it works great. i also have a grapevine T-stand. that is good too.

Cool well we have a large orchard on our farm and just removed a apple tree that was blown over so I may just use some of it. I also have some river breach I may try and see how it does. Thanks for the help!

yeah, apple is good. i dont know about river breach. make sure its safe for birds bfore you use it. let me know hw it turns out! send some pics!

Two very good wood are grapevine and bottle brush. And like what mrgoogals have said, apple tree are totally fine for parrots. I live in Australia, I like to make my own play stand for my alexandrine parakeet Ozzie, and my two cockatiels. And the most common wood I use for my parrots are eucalyptus since they are native to Australia. :)

yup, thats good wood too :) as long as its non toxic. it can he a playgym. well, i guess u wouldnt really want ike balsa wood. but you get what i mean XD

Of cause, all of the bird safe woods are fine. A common wood been used when comes to play stand and perches for parrot are coffeewood, it is a beautiful wood. But it's not the best. The reason for that is becuase it's very slippery. So the bird gets something called "bumblefoot". Which is when the bird tries to grab onto the wood, the bird slid. And it causes abrasion on their pads, which is not good for the bird. So don't choose wood that is too slippery. :)

Hope this helped.

OMG
Mishka chews and demolishes any type of wood. I know it's good for his beak etc, but all I do is re-build his playpen and swing.

The next time I will purchase a stainless steel playpen and swing
Just joking :)

Mine is an actual Manzanita tree branch. I attached some bird-safe 1x4 in the middle for him to sit on, then I hang toys from the other branches. The tree branch is in a Christmas tree stand.

Well im from kentucky so I have most of you basic oaks. It sticks because nashville is the only place that really has alot of bird items. I have to work with petsmart right now.
