This is one of those "I feel so silly doing but my birds seem to like it" things. I have tried this with blue crowns other than my pair with the same results and I was wondering how many blue crown companions have done this or seen their birds doing it. Stand a couple of feet away from the bird, put your hands behind your back and make a slow bowing motion towards him/her while making a low pitched "murrrrrrrrrr" sound. I usually say "bird" and really draw out the r. Almost every time I get a bowing and murrrr response out of both of them. They can get quite excited doing it. And while doing this, I will occasionally whistle loud and high and usually they will both stand straight up and pin their eyes before going back to bowing. I demonstrated it for a bird sitter who has a blue crown and her jaw just about hit the floor.

I am guessing that it is some type of recognition ritual with them. Any blue crown companions ever see your bird doing that? Tried to imitate it yourself? Willing to feel silly and try it? ;)

I wish that I could get a video of it. Somehow I'll have to get my phone set up somewhere and try to record them.

Hi JamesC, I have never seen a blue crown conure. I would love to see you and your birds doing that! I am going to try it with my green cheek and see what happens. hehe :)

I guess the other BCC owners haven't seen this thread yet, or are pretending they didn't? LOL kidding James. :D We need all BCC owners to do this on videotape and compare lol.

Mrs. Kay, you can try with Larry the GCC too :D!

Merle does this. It's really strange. He sometimes makes a sound when he does it, but it isn't a low sound like you're describing. I can take a video if anyone wants to see him doing it. None of the other birds do it.

Gonna see if Peep (my cinnamon gcc) will play along! What fun birds conures are!

Tried this on my Sun Conure, Chopper...he stopped what he was doing and gave me what we call "side-eye"...head cocked to one side, as if he wondered WTF I was doing.

About the third time I did it, he moved his head back and forth, in time with me bowing.

Hilarious!

Sherlock does it a lot when I stroke from head to tail. I thought he was special lol. Well he's still special. We sound like the grudge girl when we do our purr

This is so weird! Please post videos of this

If it makes you feel better I have a weird thing like this I do for sootie that makes me look like a doofus. I creep around her cage when she's on top of it on my tip toes with my arms pulled in like a cartoon burgler. She puffs of and struts to the edge of her cage that I'm nearest and when she gets close I gasp and stand up straight suddenly like she's caught me creeping around, and then she peeps and shoots up tall and pins her eyes. She thinks it's so entertaining

Yeah...can't believe I just admitted I do that.
