My favorite of Howard's mutations are the Chocolate Raspberry mutation blue fronts...

Hey birdman, want me to check on one of those BFAs for you? To be honest ,there's not much demand for them. In Howard's words,,"it's still a BFA"... LOL the napes are much more indemand.

Looks like I just missed one thread in April 2014 and another from 2013

I found it fascinating that all Yellow-naped have blue & yellow in their feathers to make green, and these are blue because the yellow is missing !

How much are they going for now?

12,000 USD. I know he had some eggs earlier this yr but haven't asked about the "hatch". Want me to check for you? how many you want? LOL
Seriously, i could probably get a baby (if available) for less and handfeed it out. I'm buying immature "split to blue" as breeder stock and have a good relationship with Howard. Another month or two of good jobs and i can pick out my male, hence my visit in July.

that's Howard's words,, I knew i'd catch some flak over that. personally i'm not a big fan... but i've only meet a few. You fall in love with your first, LOL. really,,,, there's not a "hills of beans worth of difference" in the "hot three". people just develop favorites. I remember when you never even heard of BFAs. Now i wish i had some breeders. No offense intended.

No offense taken. To be honest, BFA's were never on my "short list" of desired species when we were looking for a bird either. They seem to have the worst reputation out of all the zons, but as we wanted to adopt an older bird, you don't get the same ability to choose species as you would through breeders. I *really* wanted a DYH or mealy, but when Kiwi came up needing a home ASAP, I just could not leave him in the conditions he was in.

He's actually a really sweet bird once he gets to know/trusts you, and he's extremely smart, but strangers better watch out And he DEFINITELY has the kind of hormonal phase the "warnings" speak of with male BFAs, but that's not something he can help (and has mellowed out with age). But I do completely see why there's not a huge demand for them if Kiwi is a 'typical' example of a BFA. Not cuddly, nasty hormones and *can* be VERY loud. If his behaviors at this point are typical of the species (which they seem to be), it's probably more than a lot of people would likely want to take on when deciding on a new bird and paying a chunk of money for a hand reared baby. Rescues are a whole different story because you don't get to choose your ideal species like you do with babies.

Edit: Wanted to add, I don't want anyone to get the impression I don't love my Kiwi! He was just a case of never knowing I wanted a BFA before I got one

Any green bird has the potential to be blue or yellow!




Blue mutation scarlets do not appeal to me (white bird with blue in the wings and tail feathers where blue would normally be)


Although I kind of do love the blue opaline blue and gold mutations! (more blue in the wings than the blue scarlets, but less blue than a blue mutation B&G)

I grew up with a DYH female, and she was just the *best bird*. If my mom was willing to give her up, I would take her and her "mate" (a GCA), so thats why I wanted a DYH (I missed Lucy). I've always loved mealys too, and how big they are with the reputation for being absolute sweethearts. When we got Kiwi on the other hand, he was about 10, and going through those couple years hot 3 males apparently do where they are a constant ball of hormones. That was above and beyond the other behavioral issues stemming from neglect. It was a rough and miserable first few years:52: But his hormones have settled down dramatically and his behavior issues have been addressed, so he is actually a really nice little bird these days. Still not cuddly though, and likely never will be. I think all of the hot 3 males are probably a toss up of which individual is going to be the meanest once they enter that "phase", but I can see people avoiding buying them when they are going to go from cute, inquisitive baby to raging hormone monster you have to figure out how to handle someday

My BFA was a FEMALE.

My DYH's and NAPES were fosters and they were all males. Which pretty much explains it right there. The male/female differences in amazons during breeding season are pretty pronounced...

My female birds may be moody, but they also become even more affectionate... My males got territorial, which leads to "protect the nest" behaviors. Away from "the nest" they were fine, but picking them up could sometimes be an adventure...

My red lored amazon is actually courting me at the moment... she's in full on hormonal overload!

Rare of course but if you have the $$ I bet one could be found. Crazy money though. When I got Salty, the place had 2 just sold and going to Asia somewhere. The figure I remember was $35K USD for the pair. They were blue with the white spot on the nape, pretty striking looking. I have mixed feelings on breeding mutations, which I will not discuss here.

Wish the photos from that website weren’t so extremely photoshopped that I thought the whole thing was fake before I googled it! The web has much better photos.

I love blue (it’s my favorite color) but I think I prefer the original variety. Not to mention animals with color mutations sometimes have other genetic anomalies, and unlike in dogs or cats we don’t know enough about them to be sure it’s safe. It could be that they’re rare in the wild because such coloring would be disadvantageous, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn other factors are at play.

Conversely, I’d be inclined to wholly disregard the idea that a color mutation makes them more intelligent. The evidence presented in the website shared here is unscientific at best and blatant marketing for already expensive birds at best.
