- Pickles-white winged parakeet; Yoda-Quaker parrot; Solo- Senegal parrot; Kiwi-white winged parakeet-Forever in our hearts, RIP
My husband and I recently decided to add a bird or two to our family and after some searching and research we found some white winged parakeets at a local bird store.
I was originally just intending to get one bird, especially if that bird was not hand tame. However, after interacting with the white wings a few times (there are four of the), the store manager offered us a reduced price on the second bird if we got a pair.
I have read that a single bird tends to bond with its owner more strongly and a pair tends to bond with each other. I certainly wouldn't mind a bird very bonded to me, but my husband and I both work full time (on the same shift so gone all day) and I don't want the bird to be lonely.
These white wings are about 8 or 9 months old, and have been at the store (4 of them in the same cage) for 5 months or so. The employees make it a point to try to handle them as much as possible. A couple of the individuals will come to us easily, and all are very curious about us.
Even though I know they may bond to each other, I still want them to be pets as well.
What is the best way to accomplish this? Do I spend individual time with each bird in the presence of the other or away from the other? Should my husband, say, mess with one bird in one room while I take the other in another room?
