Bought yellow naped amazon no talking?

Hi guys new on the forum quick question i bought a 3 year old yellow naped amazon from a pet sotre owner said he talks and all im on my second day and doesnt say anything none of the word he said he says he is very tame but no words . Do i have to wait more? When is the closing time or age that a yellow naped can not learn to talk? Thanks

First off, never buy a bird expecting them to talk. Saying this the store did tell you he knew a few words, so unless they were just trying to get a sale and lied he may start talking once he settles in. Be patient and talk gently to him, let him get to know you and feel comfortable in his new home.

We often forget when bringing a parrot home that their life is suddenly changing, they have no idea what's going on and it's scary. It may take months until he decides to talk again, just enjoy your beautiful bird and spend time bonding with him.

Do you have any experience with parrots? Amazons are considered one of the more difficult parrots to deal with because of their hormones and such.

Welcome to the forums Tech.....glad you decided to join us.....

Think of your bringing your YNA home as an upgrade that needs activation.....the upgrade is the bird moving from the pest store to your home & the activation will be when the bird begins to feel comfortable...both with you & its new surroundings.....

If a bird is known to talk, then they usually will begin talking again, but unlike a dog, the bird's not going to wag it's tail & sit up and talk for its supper.....talking is totally up to the bird...no switches to turn it on & off.....

Something else, you need to read up on touch training and clicker training & start working with the bird...or...the bird will reach the end of its proverbial honeymoon & you might have an unruly YNA on your hands.....they don't come pre-trained, it's something you have to always work on.....training & boundaries.....

Zons live into their 50s, so I would say their learning abilities would run into the 50s at least.....

Thanks do you guys know of any cds you can recommend so i canbuy to ease him to talk? First parrot and i understand theyre unruly i own a 200 pound caucasian ovcharka dog as well (most unruly aggressive dog breed )

Maybe someone else might know of some CDs, but many birds get their repertoire from listening in to conversations of their companion humans, television & radio.....your bird will learn/mimic what interests it, not necessarily what you want it to learn, unless you want to do voice lessons with it.....maybe 15 minute sessions 4-5 times a day.....and.....you could go buy several voice coach CDs, spend the coaching time with it and it never say a word.....like Copper said, If you buy a bird because you want it to talk, there is no guarantees on a bird ever talking, except maybe a mynah, toucan, crows & ravens.....

Thanks for advice.... Wat do you guys suggest for indoor tree for him? Java tree or a manzanilla tree perch.? You guys are the best first parrot and i love it amazing how atached you can get to it

Many congrats on your new Amazon. You've received some OUTSTANDING advice!

Please, don't buy a bird with any expectations, especially expectations that he/she will talk. Yellow Napes can be AMAZING talkers and singers, but they have to feel comfortable and secure first. 3 years is still very VERY young for a YN Amazon. He's not even mature yet.

The best way to teach your bird to talk is to spend MUCH time with him and repeat, repeat, repeat. Yes, there are CDs and even videos out there, but I would wait until he starts talking before you go that route. I personally use THIS device when I have to be out of the house for a while:

As a dog lover, I just HAVE to ask: Can you PLEASE please...pretty please post some pics of your caucasian ovcharka? They are GORGEOUS, hairy beasts!!!

This pretty much resume everything. When we first got Kiwi ( she doesn't talk by the way) She was shy and observing us and then slowly but surely i started interacting with her and 5 days later she was following me on the floor. I bought Kiwi from an elderly lady expecting her to talk but i realized fast enough that she wouldn't be a talker. ON the other hand, she is not a normal amazon. she doesn't bite ; she bites her on right leg when she wants to bite us ( haven't figure out why yet..) and i am able to touch as i want. Don't think that i am touching her wings for fun but she has a cyst problems and sometimes she lets me oopen her right wing and take a look without making any single noise !

Anyway Amazons are wonderful pets but they're not for everybody

My Blue frnt zon rehome is 30plus years. I got him in November,hearing from the the owner he talked and sang . He was so quiet at first [barely made a peep] About 3 months ,He opened up. Now hes loud as hell [and I love it] He sings Im a good boy at the top of his lungs . Im sure your bird talks [he just doesn't feel like it yet] . My advice ,focas and building your bond with him [and update us in 3 months ]

Yeah, Emmy was quiet at first, too. She talks the most when music is playing. She still grows quiet when we have visitors.

I have a rehomed amazon which I have had for about 4 months. For the longest time he only said hello, good morning and good night. I knew because he was in his 20's his vocabulary was larger. Every now and then something new will be said. My point is have some patience with the bird. The best things are always worth waiting for.

From reading the OP's posts, it seems the most important thing is the ability to talk. I hope that's not the only reason for getting the bird. Mine talks but has not been very active by playing with toys. I would rather have more movement and personality than sitting and talking.

Going through the BirdTricks.com material I bought, they believe the best way to get him to talk is to build a solid connection between you and the bird. They also suggest the best way to do that is through training.

ON THE OTHER HAND ...

Birds capable of vocalizing are like little kids, they will repeat what they hear that appears to be emphasized more than the rest. You can sweetly repeat "pretty bird" till you are blue in the face with no luck getting the bird to repeat it; but, the first time you hit your finger with a hammer, or stub your toe and you let out an excited and emphatic "expletive deleted" (#$@&&!**) , you may just discover your bird CAN talk (I think there's a joke about a talking parrot, a visiting minister and a mortified bird owner, LOL)

Ovcharkas the most beautiful of the dogs in my opinion ... He wont anyone near the house though but immediate family wife kids me and grandma no one else. Best guard dog in world ... Will post pics in a few
