Parrots
Budgie
He’s comfortable eating from my hand today! We’re practicing step ups today, he’s not biting my fingers anymore but gets on and gets excited about my hand entering his cage!
Any advice when you would introduce the hand of another person?

In a couple of days. At this point, continue to assure that hands are safe and that only good things happen when Humans and their hands are around.

Please remember that Parrots do not always connect our hands to our head. So, as part of working with him. Keep the upper part of your arm along your side so as to tie yourself together for him.

When he appears comfortable with your hand, have another individual, with food, bring their hand slowly next to yours. At first, he may fly-off or step away, but fairly quickly, he will just shift to the next hand.

A step between, would be with you adding food to your other hand and create that transition prior to adding another person!

Congratulations!

Ok now I’m convinced we have an extra smart parrot lol. He’s happily eating off of my 2 son’s hands as well, and is currently flying (more like chilling lol) in one of the rooms.
He’s associating our hands with our faces, I figured they wouldn’t automatically link different body parts so I made sure to put both in view and touch my face when talking to him. Oh boy that sounds weird šŸ˜‚

So, you are also beginning to understand why we are referred to as crazy Parrot people! That makes sense to us! :D

I'm not a big fan of the style of cage you have, but I realize you may not have very many options where you live. If you can get a bigger cage with natural perches (no wooden dowels or fake plastic perches) would be great! (not something that needs to be done immediately, but perhaps in the future?)

My recommendation would have been to just have others feed your lovie by hand - and I see you already figured that part out! Looks like Chewy is doing fantastic! Great job!

Yay Chewie! And Jennefer, welcome to the world of crazy, gushy, ā€œmy bird is the smartest and sweetest everā€ [emoji2]

Lol I’m in absolute love! The plan is to have a cage made actually, once my carpenter friend has time available... he’s a bit busy fixing roofs and homes after hurricane Irma destroyed everything on the island.
I have branches as perches, the 2 plastics are going to be replaced soon also!
The plan is to allow as little cage time as possible , I completely agree with the cage being on the small side! That’s the biggest one I’ve found, as horrible as that is. Which is also why we were so keen on flying time:)
He is no longer afraid, walking around on the bed and floors in between the kids play! He even joins them by taking rides on the toy cars lol
Step ups still need work, he’s stepping over, not up although he’s not afraid of our hands at all...

Not sure how to post the pictures bigger and why they’re going sideways but you get the point :)
Fellow parrot crazies here! Yay!

It's rare that a home made cage is done so that it's safe for your bird and will last . Parrots chew on everything, and if the idea is to use any kind of zinc coated chicken wire, hardware cloth or other zinc plated bars, Chewie will get heavy metal poisoning. And any this made of wood may be chewed and destroyed, like a frame. Best bet is a commercially ade, powder coated cage. That is a tough coating and will last 10 years or more.

That’s true, but my friend has his own lovebirds and parrotlets in a cage he made himself, they’ve been around a long time lol. But I’ll make sure to relay that information to him as well when he gets around to making one. And if it takes too long I might have to order and ship one in...

Congratulations, Jennneferrrrr!

The heart of a proud parront is a thing of beauty!

Sounds like Chewy is going to have a great life in your home!!!

We can click on the images to enlarge them, but you'd need to use a photo editing software to 'fix' how they load.

So sad to see how much damage Hurricane Irma caused. :(

Soooooo sweet, I’m smitten with chewy. Love the name!

Chewy is so sweet! He seems to really be settling right in! The looks on your adorable sons' faces are precious.
