Budgie, "Julie"
First off, let me introduce myself, i am semi-experienced at being owned by birds. I have a budgie, who thinks she is a hyacinth! She loves to dance, jump, and just goof off! However, when i am in a bad mood, she comforts me with a snuggle. Budgies are so underrated parrots, and really should be sought out just as much as macaws and large-cockatoos. I also have worked with many parrots at the zoo. (volunteer work) Anyway, I am looking for another "fid",
and have been doing research. I have been researching different types of parrots for around 3 years now, but nothing beats talking to those with raw experience! I have a lot of time on my hands, and I was thinking about adopting a cockatoo that needs a home. For a while i was set on getting a baby black-palm and even met her and played with her, however I would rather the bird goes into a well-established breeding program to help sustain the beautiful species. While poking around i came across a website called "mytoos" and it was dreadful, however i'm not getting the bird for it's cuddly nature, or because it "matches furniture", i am rescuing the bird to be it's companion and to build a special relationship, with a bird who has had many hardships in its life. I understand i cannot cuddle for hours with the parrot, because it makes them scream/mutilate, and when they do scream i know not to even look at her, because it means they got what they want. Attention. Do you think I am ready for a large jump from a budgie to a cockatoo (i have handled large parrots before) If not, what do you recommend? I cannot do conures, mini-macaws, lovebirds, parrotlets or any of the poicephalus parrots, because of personal preference and my family's preference. Thank you for reading my block of type, and helping me find another buddy. :D:whiteblue:

Welcome to the forums.....glad you dropped in.....

The jump from budgie to 'too is a big one, but you've apparently already made up your mind and we wouldn't really know if you were ready.....you're the only one who can make that decision...after you get a 'too.....

Good luck.....

I want to realistically assess my lifestyle and future before i rescue a cockatoo... I'm sure i'm ready... get ready cleveland....the new most hated bird is in town, get ready to never sleep in again! :D

I'm a bit baffled, why such preference?

I'm a sucker for Cockatoos but after my last one Java the U2, I don't think I would step into that territory for awhile. After owning and working with so many different type of birds, he is the only one that scares me because he's so unpredictable and can be very dangerous. He wasn't raised right to begin with and although we loved each other. I was still afraid of him....I can pick up Macaws without hesitation, but I think twice before picking him up.

After saying that about Java, my other Cockatoo Dixie, she's a Lesser Sulphur Crested, now she's a sweet heart! I don't hesitate to pick her up what so ever.

Like Weco says, the choice is yours to decide. Good Luck!

Welcome to the forum, Wings. :)

Kudos to you for looking at rescues! Personally I can't tell you anything about cockatoos, as I've never had the pleasure of being owned by one, but we have tons of members who have, and will be able to give you terrific advice. :)

Thanks everyone for your wonderful advice, but after reading how unpredictable these beautiful birds can be, i do not think i am ready for such a jump. Thanks for your support, i think that I am going to be more research....*sigh* lol
