After months of trying to get Skittles to try other foods I finally had a breakthrough.

Yesterday, I stood close to his cage and moaned & cooed over a lemon-poppyseed muffin. He came close, but not close enough to try it. So I pit the last piece between the top bars and left it for him. He finally tried it . and liked it. I ended up picking it up and he took it from me and ate the rest.

This morning, I tried it again. I started eating it next to the cage. When he came close enough I pulled a small piece off and tried to give it to him.

He walked around it, stepped up and took a bite out of the main muffin.

We both clicked and cooed as we finished it together!

Best breakfast I've had in quite some time! :green:

He's eating cantaloupe now! :D

AWESOME!!!!! I bet this is just the beginning of Skittles realizing just how good food can be. :D I think the hardest part is over, which was having him even TRY something new.

YAY!!! That was one MAJOR milestone, Forbey!!! WOHOOO!!!!! :D

Took me what seems like forever for Rio to try Watermelon. I offered it to her, she ignored it. Today I placed a piece on top of her cage where she was, she ignore it. Then I'm siting here reading posts on this forum and I hear it... The sound of watermelon being eaten. Ha! Finally, and she likes it! Brat bird. :)

Wow that's awesome! I remember how difficult it was for my budgie to try something new, it took close to two years! Grats for the milestone!

Awwww skittles likes muffins :) lemon poppy seed is my favorite lol. My little kiwi hasn't had anything except baby formula and puréed bananas, tried her with mango but she was not very fond of it.

My wife (who currently has a love/hate relationship with Skittles) gave me the oddest look this morning.

Here I am, minding my own business, standing in the kitchen, next to Skittles' cage, eating my morning muffin ...

Well, Skittles and I were eating my morning muffin, LOL!

I pull off a bite for me and Skittles takes a bite... AND REPEAT (until muffin is gone!) :D:green::D

After learning that he loves my muffins, he runs straight to the cage corner so he doesn't miss out.

I have the opposite problem with Rio. He wants to eat anything and everything I am eating. Curious little feathered baby I have.

But my mom is having food problems with her Quaker Gizmo. She cant even put a carrot near the birds cage without her freaking out!

Breakfast with Skitles continues with no ill effects. Actually, he almost fell off his cage this morning leaning for the muffin as I came close to the cage.

We have increased the number of things Skittles will eat. Last night he tried cake and popcorn (unsalted/unbuttered) and he decided he likes both. I also gave him a tablespoon of the seed mix he used to eat before I started changing his diet. He really went to town on it. I now know what I wil use to treat him during training.

Last night was another late night for me. Around midnight I gor up from the TV and went to put Skittles to bed. We spent a good 20 minutes playing on top of the cage. Well Skittles was on top of the cage, I had to stand on the floor, LOL)

Scratching his head, petting his neck, feet and gently grabbing his beak. He managed to get in some quality time with my wedding ring ... luckily, he let me hold his beak while I pryed him off. Letting him grab my fingers with one foot or the other and wrestling with him trying to get him on his back. He spent a lot of time mouthing my fingers, arm, and shirt and only once did he bite down with any force, but never hard enough to cause worry.

When he got up this morning I was able to quickly move in and tug on his beak with no apparent concern on his part.

All-in-all, a good 24 hours with Skittles! :green::D

I love sharing my food with Anneliese! She is so funny...like child :)

Skittles likes Life cereal, but he's a little leary of plums.

This morning, my wife came home from work with groceries, including banana nut muffins. She got one out for herself and walked from the kitchen into the living room (passed Skittles' cage). Skittle dropped down to an almost flat possition, spread his wings just a tad, and quivered as he tried to reach for her muffin. Donna is even more scared of him than before, so all I could do was laugh and get a muffin for Skittles to share with me.

Muffins seem to be like crack to Skittles. Not only does he get excited when he sees one, he seems to get upset when I eat the last bite. I try to save it for him, but I gave him a bite and popped the last bite in my mouth and he gave me a definite LOOK, that said, "that was supposed to be mine!". :green::confused:

The best part of your breakfast with Skittles is that you two are bonding!
I love your story.
I would start introducing some fruit as part of your breakfast, see what happens. I am eating so much healthier since I have my Zon.....
I've read somewhere that the best bonding happens when you share food with your bird.
Great achivement!

Those bonding experiences over breakfast are lovely. Now I ve got a hankering for some lemon poppyseed muffins, I reckon kiwi would like them as well, eagerly anticipating our first muffin together. Sorry to hear about your Donna being afraid of your Skittles, I can relate as I live with my family and both siblings are terribly afraid of my baby Amazon. If I may, is 8 weeks too young to start introducing solid foods? My kiwi seems very interested in my pears and grapes, I ve wanted to offer her a bit of peeled diced fruit is this safe? Thank you very much. Have a lovely evening.

I'm using the same process to try and introduce fruits and vegetables. So far, he isn't cooperating He's tried plums, strawberries, bananas, broccali, mashed potatoes, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and a few other items.
With the exception of muffins, Life cereal, pecans, walnuts and almonds, he hasn't latched on to many of them ... YET!
