breeding section

I thought that the forum could use a breeding section or at least a breeding topic. I know most of you guys don't support breeding but people do it anyway, like me. I was looking on youtube and I noticed that most breeders stick their birds into tiny cages with no toys, just food/water and a box. So I thought it would be a good idea for us breeders on here to post pictures of our breeding setups so that people looking to breed can have a reference as to how they should setup their pairs. It would also be nice for you breeders to tell us a little about how you should go about breeding, the dangers involved, the time involved, and the costs(like how you don't make a lot of money doing it).

I will post pics of my setup on Monday because tomorrow is mothers day!
The dimensions of my breeding pairs(green cheek conures) cage is 32"L×23"W×40"H.

Hey cdog, guess you can see how Moderators have their own agenda and you and i don't fit in. Maybe they'll figure it out when they realize that my breeder birds out live their pets. I just put my "thick skin" on and hang around , maybe i can help a few birds and their owners. Speaking of cage sizes, i keep zons in 36" W x 36" H X 72" L , i go for longer rather than taller, many of the birds prefer to fly from one end to the other. I know the pet industry pushes the taller cages because they take less room in the house but when you breed you cater to the birds wishes instead of your own. (BTW SB i never would have responded to this post if it hadn't for your lovely post)

unrelated to breeding - but i too opt for longer rather than taller cages. most birds loved to fly aswell as climb and they can't do that in a skyscraper

Personally, I think a breeder's forum is a good idea for a variety of reasons; The rest of us can hopefully ask questions of breeders here for things we might like to know while researching or looking for our next bird. I also think it could be used as a deterrent for those who think they'll just get a couple of birds, put them together and they'll automatically have babies that they can sell (I think us regulars know it doesn't work that way ) as we have recently seen happen with another member.

I don't believe in dog breeding, because there's plenty of dogs who already need homes but I know people are going to do it regardless. I'd rather safe, proper practices are in place and that people have a place to go to learn such things. Like, how both male and female dogs should have hip x-rays to rule out any dysplasia and special eye exams from a doggie optomitrist, along with a gauntlet of other tests, before they are bred? Most people don't realize that. But if those who were serious about breeding, no matter what it is they're breeding, had a good place to go where they could learn things such as that, I don't see how it wouldn't be a good thing. So I say, go for it.

Think of it this way; some of us may not like breeding, but people are going to do it anyway. To not give them a place to discuss it doesn't mean it's not going to happen. Just like parents who think their children will remain abstinent until marriage and refuse to talk about sex with their kids, often end up with the kids who weren't practicing safe sex.

As much as I dislike the idea of promoting breeding itself, I have to agree with Katherine, people are going to do it and I'd rather people had a place to come, ask questions and go about it properly than head into blindly and mess healthy and mentally stable birds up.

I was interested in breeding, but it was only after coming here and reading further into it that I decided I wasn't going to be a part of it. If I didn't have this then I think I might have done it with niave thoughts of money and all those beautiful babies going to perfect homes, which I just can't guarantee. So many older birdies needing homes that me breeding isn't needed/wanted.

The only reason I think this would be a good idea is because often times those of us who dont breed still have questions related to breeding. There are hormones, egg binding issues, handfeeding that many of us have questions about. It would be nice to have all that information in one place!

I think it would be a great thing for everyone and look at it this way, if u don't like breeding u don't have to look at the topic in the other forums. U just stay away from the breeding forum.

I think the more information available the better. I wouldn't want it to turn into a market place...but truth is some people aren't a candidate for rescue or re-home birds,but are still loving and qualified flock members. I'm against puppy mills but a responsible breeder would be a good resource for information. IMO...

ETA: Clearly there are a lot of people (members included) who are buying from breeders anyway, so I think a place that discussed the ins and outs of ethical breeding practices would be a great source of information for people who will go to breeders anyway. There is a specific type of bird I plan to get in the future that I have yet to hear of being in my local bird rescue, so I probably WILL go to a breeder I feel comfortable with. Resources to help people find reputable and responsible breeders is, imo, a good thing.

I like the abstinence analogy... Avoiding talking about it doesn't mean it won't happen, it just means people will have way less info on how to go about it if they are going to do it anyways.

Cdog, that's not what I was trying to say at all! I just meant, we were talking about this before and I don't remember anyone having a problem with it, most seemed to like the idea and then nothing ever came of it Hopefully this time we can get our section! lol.
