Hey all! I have a couple of questions about my budgie Piper and feeding a pellet diet. I have been offering a budgie pellet/crumble for 6 months or so now and haven't had much success so I've been mixing with seed (and fruit and veg). A bit more recently I got a GCC (Momo) and the two of them are the best of friends and now Piper is very interested in Momo's pellets. They sometimes hang out together in one cage (supervised) and Piper will eat some of Momo's food.

My question is would the GCCs pellets be giving the budgie too much/too little of anything or be unsafe at all? (I limit the amount they get as much as I can but the budgie isn't tame so it's a struggle). Also if the pellets are safe/good for both birds would you recommend continuing with the budgie mix or just switching over?

I was also thinking that if I gave some of the budgie pellets to my GCC it might make the budgie more likely to try them, what do you guys think?

Thanks for any advice!

The only difference between pellets made for conures and pellets made for budgies is the size. My birds sneak into each others’ cages and steal their food all the time. If your budgie likes the larger sized pellets, then go for it. I give my GCC and cockatiel slightly larger pellets than my budgies, but that’s just a matter of what the birds prefer.

I suspect they're the same or very similar mix... are they the same brand? You could take a look at the ingredients, side by side.

My personal preference is Harrison's. Here's mu usual spiel. :)

Harrison's Bird Foods
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products. :)
Another couple of ideas...
My ol' man is an athlete and health nut. He actually EATS all the good stuff, so it's always around. I find that tossing various stuff into the food bowls at random is good... the variations and differences seem to stimulate curiosity and attention.
The other idea... if you can stand it (lol) EAT the stuff in front of the birds, yes. That encourages them. I have also found that if my ol' man eats stuff in front of the bird, the bird WANTS it for himself. Kinda a rivalry thing!
