Budgies. Lotsa Budgies.
I really have to watch my budgie Joey when she's out. She could barely fly until about a month ago and now at 8 months old she goes everywhere and gets into everything. Today I was lying on the bed reading while Joey explored the room. She flew to the top of a seven foot tall cabinet in the corner of the room while I watched her out of the corner of my eye. Suddenly she was gone! I called for her but no response, so I got out a ladder to retrieve her from the top of the cabinet but she was gone! I could hear her scratching around somewhere unseen so I got a flashlight and started looking everywhere and couldn't find her. Finally she started doing the budgie scream and I heared her- she had fallen down a 1 1/2 inch crack between the cabinet and the wall and was trapped at the bottom seven feet down! She couldn't a walk out into the room because there was a piece if baseboard trim blocking her exit. The cabinet was mounted to the wall so I couldn't move it and even if I could she could easily get crushed in the process. I put my hand down there sideways and fortunately she climbed into my hand and I pulled her out. That was a close call! I put a towel on top of the cabinet to block the crack. Only a couple hours earlier I had been thinking about whether it was safe to let her play around up there and had checked the size of the crack and decided it was too small for her to fit through. I sure was wrong about THAT! Don't underestimate your birds' ability to get into a jam!

It's difficult to determine what/why birds will do something. Sometimes I think birds can pick up on their human pets thoughts. Like above, you think, bird does!

I am so glad that she is okay!

Freya (female Budgie) once climbed down the tube of a paper towel roll that I left standing up on the table in the bird room. I walked into the room, couldn't find her, and heard a scratching sound.

If I hadn't been in the room when Joey disappeared down that crack and she hadn't made any noise I'm pretty sure I would not have found her because I wouldn't have looked there. I would have looked in the large closet and every other "accessible" place I could think of but not down that crack. Some budgies get silent when scared and many stay silent while watching you look for them. Joey isn't really scared of anything and I think she knew I'd rescue her if she got noisy.
