So it's winter here, and I just found my male parakeets tail feather at the bottom of the cage. He's also lost very small feathers over the period of the last month or so. I've heard it's abnormal to molt in winter and may be plucking, so I want to be sure. It's good to note though that it's been very warm in the house because of our heating system. The birds are in the warmest part of the house. Could they be molting due to just the warm stimulus?

Here's what his feather looks like. It is damaged badly from his old home in a tiny cage.

My budgie Bluebell is molting right now. Budgies seem to molt more often than most parrots, and budgies that pluck are very uncommon. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Seperate question, but does molting make them moody like other species? My Skye, my male budgie who's molting, has been snapping at Cloud, my female.

Both of ours are molting right now. Feathers everywhere!:eek:

It does indeed make them moody! My Budgies also molt at periods all year round, regardless of the season.

do remember that Budgies are native australians so for their internal body clock it's currently the middle of summer

also, yes they get very grumpy when molting
