Ok so I we purchased a cage from EBay....brand new and a great deal. Right??? WRONG!!! Chico comes home end of July, August. That's tentative target but he is weaning and nothing is set in stone. We set up the cage so that Charlie my Wheaten can explore it get used to it in the house etc.....this morning I notice a brownish red spot near the screw....then I notice all the coating chipping off and RUST DOWN THE ENTIRE BACK SIDE! No I didn't leave it in the rain or even get it wet! Buyer beware....cheap cages are exactly that cheap! You don't know what your getting. I'm now taking it up with the wholesaler YescomUSA who wants a feedback from me to boot. Going to get a real HQ cage from a reputable store who stands by the product. I'm really livid. They want the cage back tom refund me but I have to pay for shipping...I'm just going to take the 175.00 hit but for anybody reading please make sure you don't cut corners with these EBay sellers....in the end what you think your saving could cost you your birds life!

Wow! Thanks for the warning. Since you are going to keep it anyway, are you going to refinish it? If so, how would you go about it?

If you paid thru paypal, then you need to file a claim with them. Believe me they will handle it. Don't take a hit like that without a fight. If it is their fault, it will cost them, not you.

Wow, what a shame. I sure wished you had checked out; Mysafebirdstore: Parrot & Bird Cages - FREE SHIPPING!! they have nice cages, free shipping for purchases over $100.00 and is a forum sponsor. Their cages are reasonably priced as well.

Please file a claim thru paypal. It is defective. Paypal will take care of you. The seller never wins on something like this.

I have bought many cages from Ebay with NO problems. It is a bad cage and u need to contact paypal. They will take care of it. I ordered all my breeding cages and the 3 my pets r in off ebay and love them. so about 30 cages and never a problem. Contact them and tell them it is defective u will get ur money back!

Thanks I'm going to contact Paypal right now and I'm going to My SafeBird Store as well!!

I'm def not going to mess with it. I'm going to just buy a new cage and be done with it. And I'm not buying anything sight unseen....I'm so aggravated. I'm an OCD-Perfectionist so this has me super bent out of shape. It's a total piece of junk.

Did you contact Paypal? Trust me you will feel better when they get finished with the seller. Since it is rusty, and peeling you should not have to pay return shipping.

Glad you posted something. I was interested in an ebay seller. I think I just might bite the bullet and order from Kings instead.

So the silver lining in all of this is I joined a bird rescue club and I'm donating the cage to someone who can finish it and use it for feathered friends who are being rehabilitated and then placed for adoption.....Lesson Learned

I agree with all who have told you to contact PayPal. They will help you make it right. At least post your dissatisfaction on eBay's rating to warn other potential clients.

Please contact paypal and don't do anything to the cage so u have proof!!!

I have all the pictures and I'm working with the seller, I will keep you all posted thanks everyone!

I would definitely not let them get away with it. Glad the seller is working with you. If not get in touch with paypal. They will make it right. You should not have to pay for the return shipping.

When it comes to cages, I've been told to avoid eBay like the plague. Mainly because if the cage as ever been "lived in", and the person either re-painted, powercoated, cleaned, etc etc to make it look new, it can still carry diseases.

I read somewhere that Beak and Feather disease can be particularly bad in second hand cages.

And just be aware as well - you have to make your claim in 45 days through PayPal!! I had a seller who strung me along for that period and when I finally got annoyed with their vague emails and the "oh, it's being transferred back to you, just wait", I filed my claim but it almost got rejected by PayPal because it was out of the period.

I had a rather extensive paper trail which I submitted as proof to PayPal that I had attempted to resolve, including the receipt/tracking # for the package I sent back to them, so PayPal (with difficulty) was able to reverse the charge after the period - but they also had the right to not reverse it! So be careful how long you wait. I set a calendar reminder myself, or tell the seller very clearly:

"You have x days/until x date or I'm submitting a claim through PayPal/requesting a charge back from my bank. If you fail to comply, you will also be reported to ACCC for a fraudulent sale, eBay and PayPal for not amending the transaction and a complaint will be lodged with eConsumer."

While I am not claiming the person who sold you the cage is fraudulent or a scammer, be very cautious and watch yourself. I've been caught out three times with "completely nice people" - 'oh, the internet wasn't working', 'my bank is giving me problems', 'I transferred it yesterday, it'll take a while to get there', 'I never received the package, did you send it??' - etc. Just be careful.

I did speak to the seller who is completely refunding me and sending UPS tomorrow to pick it up. I'm so relieved! The pictures I sent show rust everywhere there was no way to dispute it...and today there is even more rust! It's just coming out everywhere...

That is such good news. I am so glad you pursued it.

Thanks so much for the good advice

Glad to hear it is all being sorted. :) Keep record of the tracking numbers and make sure that the "Return" address is the same as the one listed on PayPal. Some sellers will send it to another location (unlisted) and "claim it never arrived" (again, first hand experience) - PayPal warns that this is a common scam technique.

If you are unsure, have a chat with PayPal and ask them what information they will need when you are returning the cage, and what paperwork, etc to keep track of. It's a quick phone call, but at least you can be reassured that you are covered :)

All the best!
